It’s one of the hotter races this year, though. Additionally, the unpredictable political dynamics could pave the way for a candidate who spends millions of her own funds while barely campaigning.

One or both of the two seats on the November ballot, according to some analysts, will likely go to Lanhee Chen, the lone Republican in the June 7 primary. Four Democrats would have to compete for the second spot as a result.

The California Democratic Party has endorsed Malia Cohen, who serves as the state Board of Equalization’s chair. Steve Glazer, a state senator from the Bay Area, is another option. He presents himself as an impartial watchdog who will challenge party leaders.

Ron Galperin, the Los Angeles city controller, claims to have the “golden ballot designation” because no other contender has the title “controller” next to his name. He claims to be well-known in Los Angeles and plans to take advantage of the anticipated large voter participation for the highly publicized mayoral campaign.

Then there is Yvonne Yiu, a current member of the city council and the previous mayor of Monterey Park, a city in the San Gabriel Valley with a population of 60,000. She has contributed nearly $5.7 million of her own funds to her campaign so far, including a $1.2 million donation last Thursday. She has worked as a financial advisor for many years.

That amounts to 95% of her $6 million in total fundraising to date. The combined fundraising efforts of the other four top candidates total nearly $7 million. As of May 27, the controller’s race had received $14.3 million more in direct campaign contributions than any other statewide race, including governor ($13.5 million) and attorney general ($12.6 million), and Yiu is largely to blame.

She stands out from the rest of the candidates running for state government in the primary with the amount of money she’s willing to invest in a contest further down the ballot.

The supporters of the other controller candidates aren’t just doing nothing. A nonpartisan spending committee supported by the California Chamber of Commerce, which has contributed $650,000 on Glazer’s behalf, is assisting him. Additionally, Cohen is supported by another IE organization that is funded by labour, nurses, and educators. Between May 23 and May 27, it claimed to have spent more than $450,000 in support of Cohen and the same amount against Chen.
