Yusef Salaam was charged with attempted rape and murder against Trisha Meili. The incident occurred in the North Woods of Manhattan’s Central Park in 1989. In that case, 5 teenagers were in custody, including Antron McCray, Raymond Santana Jr., Korey Wise and Kevin Richardson. Additionally, the FBI conducted DNA testing before the trial and none of the results matched the rape kit sample.
Later in 2002, Matías Reyes (real rapist and serial killer) confessed to his crime that he was the one who abused and assaulted Trisha Meili in the park. Furthermore, after this statement, Matías’ DNA test was performed, and this time his DNA matched Trisha’s rape kit.
Although the real culprits have been convicted, Yusef and the other children spent 12 years in prison for the crime they never committed.
