YS Jaganmohan Reddy is an Indian politician from Andhra Pradesh. He is the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. His father YS Rajasekhara Reddy was the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. He is the founder of YSR Congress. His party won the 2019 assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh.

Jaganmohan Reddy was born on 21 December 1972 (age 51 years; as of 2023) in Pulivendula village in Cuddapah district of Andhra Pradesh. He did his schooling from Hyderabad Public School, Hyderabad. After this he studied B.Com from Nizam College in 1990 and also did MBA from Nizam College in 1993. After graduating from college he started his own business. Although his father was a politician, he never thought of entering politics. In 2004, he campaigned for his father in several rallies; Being a businessman he had many contacts and knew many local people.

In 2008, he founded the daily Telugu newspaper Sakshi and soon after its success, he launched a television channel with the same name called Sakshi TV.

Jaganmohan Reddy was born in a Protestant Christian family. His father YS Rajasekhara Reddy was a Congress party politician and also the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. He died on 2 September 2009, when his helicopter crashed in the Nallamala forest in Andhra Pradesh. His mother, YS Vijayamma, is a politician, has served as an Andhra Pradesh MLA and is also the Honorary President of the YSR Congress. His sister YS Sharmila Reddy is a politician and a member of Jaganmohan’s party YSR Congress. When Jaganmohan was in jail in 2012, she handled his political campaign and also managed the party with her mother. Sharmila Reddy also did a 3000 km walkathon for YRS Congress, she started her walkathon on 18 October 2012 at Idupulapaya in Cuddapah district and ended it on 4 August 2013. He visited 14 districts of Andhra Pradesh as part of the walkathon.

Jaganmohan Reddy used to campaign for his father in 2004. He joined the Indian National Congress (INC) in 2008. He contested the Lok Sabha elections from Kadapa constituency in 2009 and won. After his father’s death in 2009, he embarked on a condolence tour and traveled across Andhra Pradesh to meet his father’s supporters. Andhra Pradesh Congress objected to this visit but said that it was their personal matter and they should not interfere in it. On 29 November 2010, he left the Congress after a rift with the Congress leadership and announced that he would form his own party within 45 days. In March 2011, he formed his own party Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress (YSR Congress).

In June 2012, YSR Congress also contested the Andhra Pradesh Assembly by-election and a Lok Sabha seat by-election. He won 17 seats in the assembly by-elections and 1 seat in the Lok Sabha elections. In the 2014 Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections, YSR Congress won only 67 out of 175 seats and lost the election. Jaganmohan Reddy was elected leader of the opposition. On 6 November 2017, he started a 3000 km long march. He carried out this march to visit all 125 assemblies and 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh and connect with the people of Andhra Pradesh. His padyatra lasted for a total of 430 days and it ended on 9 January 2019. He held rallies and campaigned across Andhra Pradesh, which gave him huge advantage in the 2019 assembly elections. On 23 May 2019, in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly election 2019, YSR Congress won the election with 151 out of 175 seats and formed the government.

  • In 2011, former Andhra Pradesh state minister P Shankar Rao had filed a petition against Reddy. They accused him of amassing wealth illegally by taking advantage of his father’s position as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The petition states that Jaganmohan Reddy had earned Rs. Rs 43,000 crore during his father’s tenure as Chief Minister. CBI registered a case against him and issued more than 11 charge sheets against him. Reddy was sent to jail on 27 May 2012 and removed from the post of Leader of the Opposition. He got bail in September 2013.

Reddy got injured and had to be operated on as the cut was very deep. The employee was later identified as J Srinivasa Rao. His motive for attacking Reddy was unclear as he had no political affiliation. Police suspect that he did this to impress some girls.
