You’ll probably recognize Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing from OWN’s Love is. Yootha played the on-again-off-again girlfriend of the main character Yasir. Yootha is also the main character in a movie that recently appeared on Netflix titled i really love. In it, Yootha’s character explores the vagaries of love as she tries to negotiate law school.
Many are surprised to learn that Yootha is Dutch and has been acclaimed as an actress in her homeland. Nearly a decade after her debut, Yootha is making waves on both sides of the Atlantic.

Yootha was born on August 19, 1987 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands to Dutch parents. She is Surinamese-Dutch. Surinamese is the official language of a former Dutch colony on the northeastern Atlantic coast of South America called Suriname. We suspect that one or both of Yootha’s parents are from Suriname.
After high school, Wong-Loi-Sing chose to study sociology instead of going to music or drama school, partly because she thought she couldn’t make it as an actress because of her race. “I thought, ‘yeah, it’s impossible for me to act the way I look,'” Yootha said. Discover Benelux.
“I perceived that the world of acting was difficult to penetrate.” However, after graduating, he focused on acting. Her sociology degree gave her an edge over his competitors, as she embodied his characters better than they did.
“I am passionate about the human mind and psyche, how we interact with people,” he said.
Starting with acting, Yootha temporarily shelved her dream of becoming a musician. “In 2013, just after graduating in sociology, I thought, ‘Okay, this is the time I’ll start recording my album.’ But the universe was like, ‘no, you’re going to do the acting thing first!’
By his own admission, every time he sees the opportunity to start recording, something else comes up and takes precedence over the music. However, he feels that he can pursue both acting and music without compromising either. “I’m just taking my time, I feel like I don’t have to make a decision [between acting and music].”

Four years after her debut as the lead in the Dutch drama the cost of sugar, Yootha traveled to Los Angeles to explore the acting industry in the United States. Wong-Loi-Sing said young agency that he would not have gone if it had not been for the insistence of his agent:
“I decided to go to Los Angeles for a week and see what it was like. She [her agent] He was the one who started it because it was never one of my goals to say, ‘I have to go to Hollywood. I want to be famous. I want to be a famous actress. It wasn’t something that was on my radar at all, which is interesting.”
Los Angeles hugged Yootha and she returned the favor. She appreciated that American productions gave her the freedom to add dimensions to her characters, something she rarely experienced in Dutch productions.
For example, she added a backstory to her character Ruby in Love He’s making his experiences resonate with a universal crowd and not just a black crowd. “I thought, ‘he’s fine, he seems like a bitter ex. How can we turn it around and make this a multifaceted woman?’” she said before adding:
“I think that’s one of the main reasons why there’s an opportunity for me or any black actress in the United States. There’s a lot more freedom in building characters, creating shows, writing scripts, and not being focused on color all the time. To be honest, Ruby’s role could be any woman, she’s not essentially someone black. All the things he’s going through are universal.”
Another important thing she learned from the United States is that she can pursue all her passions—acting, music, and fashion—without compromising any of them. She explained:
“Americans have a way of taking everything they love to do and just doing it. Music and acting are my main focus, but who knows what else may come my way. I mean, why would you restrict yourself and just lock yourself in a box?

Yootha’s character in Really Love, Stevie Richmond, is a law student struggling to find herself while falling head over heels for a struggling painter named Isaiah Maxwell. The overall theme of the film is black love, but it also touches on racism in the art world.
Wong-Loi-Sing said Ebony who fell in love with the story before starting to dissect her character. “Usually, you might get too focused on the character you’re auditioning for, but in this case, it was just the entire script, the story, the significance of the project, that caught my eye in the beginning.” Yootha said.
Yootha found that she shared many similarities with Stevie. Like Stevie, she pursued a college degree as she wondered if she had missed an opportunity to tap into her creative talents. Yootha also found Stevie’s love experiences to be ‘very real’ as a woman who had been through something similar. She said to BC:
“Sometimes, I can be a bit pretentious. And a bit arrogant to think I’m the better communicator, when the point is that it’s not about how you communicate, but how well you’re able to resonate, or say certain things, or act in a certain way that resonates with the other person. Regardless of how you feel, it would be ideal.
Yootha hopes to be an inspiration to black actresses both in the Netherlands and in the United States.
Yootha wants to impact the acting industry: first, by making sure that the writers create female characters in the same multidimensional way as male characters. “Showing the ’roundness’ of a character is almost like saying they deserve to be shown as equals, as complex human beings,” she said.
