Throughout the majority of his career, Brock Lesnar has been one of WWE’s most fantastic and most protected attractions. He was Vince McMahon’s break-glass-in-case-of-emergency main event star, and anytime the company wasn’t sure who to put the championship on, the Beast Incarnate was just a phone call away. The 45-year-old Lesnar is a top-of-the-marquee and bankable name. As such, it’s always worth noting who WWE taps to feud with him. His former opponents are a who’s who of future Hall Of Fame classes, ranging from AJ Styles to John Cena to Bobby Lashley to Drew McIntyre. Lesnar doesn’t do mid-card programs, and working with him is a rite of passage for the promotion’s major players.
That’s why a recent report from WrestlingNews.co is such a massive deal, as Angel Aramboles wrote the following on December 12: “After asking someone who is familiar with the creative plans, WrestlingNews.co was told that Lesnar vs. Gunther is one of the matches listed internally for the show. Gunther has talked about wanting the match because he feels that a match with Lesnar would present the biggest possible challenge for him.” Aramboles notes that Gunther mentioned Lesnar as his dream opponent during an interview in early November, and now, that fight might come to pass.
Brock Lesnar Can Make Or Break Gunther’s Main Event Angle
When Brock Lesnar is engaged with an opponent and feud, few in the sports entertainment industry are better. When the former UFC Heavyweight Champion sells his opposition’s offense, it’s a significant signal to WWE fans that it should be taken as severe and impactful. Gunther is one of the hardest hitters in professional wrestling history. He gained notoriety for his chest-caving chops long before he stepped foot in a WWE ring, and his run with the Intercontinental Championship throughout the summer has elevated his star.
Looking good wrestling a veteran like Sheamus over a secondary title and fighting Lesnar at the Showcase of the Immortals are two entirely different things, though. If this report is accurate—at the time of this post, no sources had corroborated WrestlingNews.co’s story—it’d be a massive bump up the card for Gunther. Not only that, but it’d be a sign that a Triple H-led WWE had big plans for Gunther and his future with the company. When McMahon retired, reports surfaced that he’d grown tired of the Austrian native and had planned to bury him. Thankfully, that never came to pass, and a marquee match with Lesnar would be a massive step forward for the former NXT United Kingdom Champion.
WrestleMania 39 doesn’t occur until April 1 and 2, and any number of things could happen between now and then. WWE possibly eyeballing a match between Gunther and Brock Lesnar now indicates just how highly they think of the latter and his IC Title run, though. Losing to Lesnar at WrestleMania can do more good for a career than winning a forgettable match earlier in the evening. Should this bout come to pass, WWE fans will have a brutal and hard-hitting affair between two of the company’s toughest wrestlers to look forward to.
