Meet William Tongi, the 18-year-old contestant of American Idol 2023.
William “Guy” Tongi, 18, is of Tonga/Samoan/Irish descent and was born on September 1, 2004 in Kahuku, Hawaii to Rodney Guy and Lillie N Rodney Tongi. Teens have a unique blend of musical abilities that few can match. It’s still early days, but the American Idol nominee has already released the song Dreams in 2020, a song he wrote specifically for his sister’s wedding. His sister tells him about her and her current husband, then her fiancé, and turns it into a wonderful love song.
Tongi graduated from Decatur High School in Washington State. He became interested in music after learning the ukulele from his teacher in fifth grade. William then took his guitar and started playing. While singer/songwriter Lauren Gruwell describes his music as a mix of country and alternative, she believes fans often associate it with the island. Tongi also plays guitar and ukulele.
