Shalhoub’s family was not particularly wealthy, and his father ran a mobile meat truck. Tony and his family were residents of Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Shalhoub’s interest in theater began at a young age, rather coincidentally. His sister had asked him to be an extra in a high school production of The King and I. Though Tony did not get to play a part, he says the experience was so profound that he decided to pursue a career in the performing arts.
He graduated from Green Bay East High School. Later, he graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a bachelor’s degree in theater. Following graduation, he enrolled in the prestigious Yale School of Drama, where he earned a master’s degree in performing arts in 1980. Shalhoub spent time at the American Repertory Theater honing his craft.
But he aspired to be a successful actor and relocated to New York, where he began by waiting tables. Finally, he made his Broadway debut in The Odd Couple, directed by Rita Moreno and starring Sally Struthers. He was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in Conversations with My Father in 1992.
Despite receiving television and film offers and even acting in them, Shalhoub’s passion for theater kept him returning to Broadway. In December 2006, he co-starred with Patricia Heaton in Theresa Rebeck’s play The Scene. In 2010, he returned to Broadway to play Saunders in a revival of Lend Me a Tenor, in which his wife Brookes also appeared.
Because Shalhoub’s wife also had a theater background, they co-starred in plays after their marriage, including Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days in 2015. He was nominated for a Tony Award in both 2013 and 2014 for his performances in Golden Boy and Act One, both of which were Lincoln Center Theater productions.
