Jeff Passan has been married to Sara Rieke since 2007 and they have two children. Sara, his wife, is a trained nurse who also serves as a supportive wife and mother. Jeff Passan is a baseball reporter for ESPN and author of The Arm: Inside the Billion Dollar Mystery of Sports’ Most Valuable Commodity. Passan attended Syracuse University after graduating from Solon High School. He wrote for The Daily Orange while at Syracuse and eventually began covering Fresco State basketball. Before joining Yahoo, he began covering baseball for The Kansas City Star in 2004.
After 13 years at Yahoo!, he joined ESPN’s baseball team in January 2019 and has been on Sports Center and The Rich Eisen Show, among others. Sara Passan (née Raike) was the daughter of Mary Beth Martz and Otto Raike. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Rockhurst University. Jeff and Sara exchanged wedding vows on January 6, 2007 at Ellen Scripps Browning Park in California.
The Passan couple honeymooned in Cancun, Mexico after their wedding. The skilled journalist and his wife Sara are the happy parents of two children. Their oldest son, Jack, is 15, and their youngest, Luke (born in April 2012), is 11. Jack and Luke are close to their grandparents, with whom they travel regularly.
Jeff Passan suffered a back injury
ESPN’s MLB pundit claimed on Twitter that he broke his back in a backyard accident on July 17, 2023. He said the injuries occurred when a huge tree branch fell on him while he was cleaning up after a major storm in Kansas City.
“The good news is I can still use my arms, legs and Twitter fingers,” Passan added. “The bad news is that I have a broken back.”
Fortunately, even as he recovers, Passan will have the tools he needs to carry out his reporting duties. He further expressed his gratitude to his family, friends and everyone at ESPN for their support, as well as the care and attention of the medical staff at KU Med. He also mockingly tweeted a picture of a broken tree on his Twitter account the day after the injury.
“This is the culprit,” read the headline. You can bet I’ll make a bat out of it.”
