Donald Sutherland was born in 1935 to Dorothy Isobel and Frederick McLeo Sutherland, who both worked in sales and ran a local gas, electricity and bus company. Saint John, in the province of New Brunswick, is where he was born.
He is primarily of German, Scottish and English descent. The actor had hepatitis, rheumatic fever and poliomyelitis as a child. When he was 14, the actor got his first part-time job as a correspondent for local radio station CKBW.

Donald Sutherland began his career after resigning from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art by spending a year and a half at the Perth Repertory Theater in Scotland (LAMDA for short).
