Ashley Tamuno is on a journey to find love written by the stars.
Ashley Tamuno, also known as Ashley Charles Burr, studied fashion design at the College of Creative Arts. They also attended the University of the Arts London. Future Writing in Stars candidates are still on their way to becoming designers, but have built a reputation in the fashion business as models and are currently represented by the agency Crumb. According to their profile on the agency’s website, they have previously been LGBT nightlife performers, hosting events and giving live presentations. They have also worked with companies including BOSS, More Joy, Sandra Lee MD Skincare and Estrid.
As children, they found an outlet in fashion, but were aware of the underrepresentation of LGBT people of color. Some of their earliest memories include watching princess movies and falling in love with their clothes. Models are not part of their plans; Although they always want to try, they don’t believe they will be good at it.
In an interview with Noctis Magazine, they said:
“I remember thinking it was a joke when I filled out the form. That was two years ago and I can’t predict how much my confidence will grow in that time.”
According to the participants of Writing in the Stars, hard work in the creative field brings a sense of satisfaction. While they sometimes feel as though the restrictions are designed to keep the business “pristine and untouchable,” they still want to get around them.
They said:
“I don’t do it as some kind of political protest; I’m doing it for myself.”
Ashley is interested in how the concept of power is represented in gendered design, so she focuses on womenswear, with the aim of questioning gender and binary concepts. They also mentioned that they plan to build a biosphere that they will produce. They believe that fashion not only reflects and influences politics but also the environment. Their goal is to ensure that their designs work within the limits of the real world while pushing boundaries. In the trailer for Written in the Stars, they say they’ve tried all the apps, and the video also reveals a possible match, although it does seem a bit convoluted. Find out what to expect when the show premieres on Discovery+ on Sunday, November 27.
