Thanks to a ruling by Lancaster County Judge Ryan Post, Nebraska released performance targets on former coach Scott Frost’s rescinded contract. The contract stipulated that if the Huskers had won at least six regular season games and contested one bowl game, it would have prompted a one-year extension for Frost and restored his annual salary to $5 million.
Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts didn’t wait to see if Frost would deliver, firing Frost after a narrow loss to Georgia Southern. Alberts would have saved Nebraska about $7 million in pay costs by delaying the firing by three weeks. The Trev and Nebraska hierarchy had clearly had enough of Frost’s disappointing four-year run as coach.

Scott Frost came to Nebraska as one of the top coaching prospects in college football. He had turned the tide for the Knights in one season, turning perennial underdogs into a formidable team.
Frost also knew Nebraska culture, having played for the Huskers at quarterback in the mid-’90s. The then-43-year-old seemed like the perfect purchase for Nebraska. Still, Scott arguably left Nebraska worse off than he found it: The Huskers’ once-heralded savior seemingly hastened Nebraska’s descent into the bottom.
Scott’s reputation has taken a huge hit. Therefore, it is unlikely that he will get a high-level coaching position anytime soon. However, he could still contribute to the success of a college soccer program as part of the coaching staff.
247Sports analyst Cooper Petagna speculated that Scott would be a good fit at Clemson. Petagna suggested that Scott would improve the team’s offense if he were hired as offensive coordinator:
“Scott Frost is a very, very smart offensive mind and I think they could use him at a place like Clemson. More than that, I think Scott Frost could use the tutelage of a guy like Dabo Swinney to see what a culture is and how to build one.”
On the other hand, fans see the Crimson Tide as the ideal choice for Scott Frost. @SSN_Alabama tweeted:: What kind of plane do you think Nick Saban has Scott Frost on for his trip to Tuscaloosa right now? Commercial? Possibly a friend’s private plane?
Regardless of Scott Frost’s dismal form in Nebraska, fans and pundits still value his skills as an offensive coordinator. Frost may not be ready for the top job, but he can do wonders for a team’s offense.
At the moment, Scott is a free training agent. It is unlikely that he will walk away from soccer, but he seems to have taken a break from being active in the game. Frost is likely on vacation after four challenging years as Nebraska’s coach, spending part of his $15 million buyout.
Former radio host Mike’l Severe claimed that Scott’s losses had little to do with his dismissal.
Scott Frost’s firing was not a surprise. However, the fact that saving $7 million could not convince Trev Alberts to stay with Scott Frost for three more weeks drew attention to Frost’s tenure as manager. Former radio host Mike’l Severe confirmed that there was more behind Scott’s firing than his dismal winning record.
“I just know this, it’s not about the losses or the lack of wins; you can call it that,” Severe said in the Hurrdat Sports Podcast. “There are so many things…if someone wanted to write a book about this mandate…first of all, it would allow Trev (Alberts) to walk away and say, ‘this is why.'”
Severe said Alberts could not publicly discuss the factors that contributed to Scott’s firing. He continued, “You can’t talk about your head coach being late for practice every day. You can’t talk about your head coach not making recruiting phone calls. It was a mess up there.”
Mike’l said Frost frustrated the assistant coaches so much that they filed complaints with Alberts. “That shouldn’t happen, you shouldn’t have your assistant coaches complaining about your head coach because he’s not doing what he’s supposed to do,” Severe said.
