Penny Warrender in only good friends represents the most iconic role of Jan Francis. Jan played the on-again-off-again lover to Paul Nicholas’ Vincent Pinner in one of John Sullivan’s ’80s gems. All three seasons of the series drew millions of viewers, with its 1984 Christmas special drawing over 20 million viewers.
No other character played by Jan Francis would reach the heights of Penny Warrender. After only good friends ended in 1986, Jan appeared in under the hammer, lovers, Collisionand emmerdale. He also acted on stage, touring in Seven Deadly Sins Four Deadly Sinners from 2004 to 2008.

It last appeared on ITV. Closest relativebut the show did not make it past season 1. It had previously appeared on BBC’s i want my wife backwhich also didn’t make it past the first season.
January said radio schedules that the crew and cast had hoped for a second season, but it has not materialized. However, Francis told the outlet that he enjoyed working on the show:
“It was a really joyous experience and I think a lot of care was taken about it. You know what I mean? The writers really went to a lot of trouble with every word and angle. I think he has a good charm, all of that. And it’s hard to describe. I mean, it’s definitely not a sitcom.”
Jan has refused to star in a new version of only good friends
Francis said radio schedules that he had turned down several requests to bring Just Good Friends back. She is of the opinion that people should leave old programs behind and focus on creating new programs:
“Just think we’re going to have something new, for now. Without going back, remembering. And they’re going to bring back the bunch of hyacinths, aren’t they and all? They’re bringing a lot of these things. I know they’re saying it was a golden age of comedy, but you’ve got to keep going, really.”
Jan thinks that only good friends It retains its value with its three seasons and one special. “If you try to spread it, it’s like gum, it loses its flavor,” she added.
Several producers have floated the idea of a revival, but Jan has shot them down. She doesn’t think it’s right to run a show without its creator, the late John Sullivan. Francis explained:
“It would have to be someone else and it was his. John’s genius and writing for a woman, it was a wonderful experience. He was a genius, he knew how to write comedies that meant something. And I don’t know if you could use the same characters with someone else at the helm. I would be worried about that. So no, let’s keep it special. Something unique”.
Francis understands why people want to bring back hit shows, but he doesn’t support it. “It was from that era, they were that age and it just hit the nail on the head and it’s so hard to do,” Jan said.
