Nelly told the outlet that her legacy “only started to connect in the last couple of years because of TikTok.”

“One day my daughter said, ‘Mom, your music is trending on TikTok,’” she recalled. “I didn’t even have TikTok on my phone and I didn’t know how to use it. We started making funny little videos there. At the same time, I started dating and often listened to my music. I found out why the DJs were playing these old songs and I found out that people want to celebrate and have fun with my music. When I started in this business, people were like, ‘Oh, maybe I’m a one-hit wonder,’ but it’s been 20 years and people still like my music.”

When it came to new music, the hitmaker made it clear that she was striving to make it the best she could be.

“I have surrounded myself with so many creative people in the studio over the past year. I took a ‘the more the merrier’ approach and I understood that you have to be open to staying excited and fresh,” he explained. “It’s about staying creative, being out there, listening to music and being in the mix. You can’t expect to rest on your laurels and then one day go into the studio and make great music.”

All of his hard work has resulted in a series of new songs: “I have so much music. I’ve recorded a hundred songs in the last 18 months and I’m so excited to bring people new music.”

At least one is a collaboration with DJ Dom Dolla, who helped shift his perspective a bit.

“Dom really taught me to go back to that truth of just feeling good and finding my soul in music. In the EDM world, they’re not really concerned with creating a pop hit or anything like that. They’re just trying to capture a moment,” he said of the Australian producer.

Nelly also has a song with the Colombian band Bomba Estéreo.
