Collin Morikawa is an American professional golfer who recently earned his second major victory at the 2021 Open Championship. Morikawa swept the competition in the junior golf categories and, for three weeks in May 2018, topped the world amateur golf rankings. Collin’s success might have come sooner if he hadn’t prioritized his college studies at UC-Berkeley.
He began competing on the PGA Tour and shocked the world when he won the 2020 PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco in his debut. Despite his astonishing achievement, many considered the victory a fluke. A subsequent dip in form seemed to validate the critics, but Collin proved them wrong by roaring to victory on the greens at Royal St. Georges Golf Club.
Collin didn’t grow up wealthy, but his parents provided him with a comfortable upbringing.
Collin was born on February 6, 1997 in Los Angeles, California, the son of Debbie and Blaine Morikawa. Collin is of Japanese-Chinese descent.
Debbie and Blaine Morikawa run a successful laundry business in Los Angeles that delivers linens to area restaurants. The income from the business provided Collin and his brother with a comfortable upbringing. Collin doesn’t describe his parents as wealthy, but claims they were able to provide most of what he asked for.
“I’ve been very lucky,” Collin said. golf summary. “We never had to think about money growing up. I never had to think about what we were having for dinner. I was not a child who wanted many things; I never asked for much. But if he needed something or wanted something, he was very lucky to have parents who could afford that kind of thing.”
Collin’s parents introduced him to golf when he was 5 years old.
When he was 5 years old, Collin’s parents convinced the organizers of a youth golf camp to let Collin participate. She wasn’t old enough to participate, but she showed signs that she was a star in the making.
Collin committed to golf when he was 10 years old. Baseball was the hardest thing to leave behind, Collin says. “It’s not that I didn’t want to play other sports,” Collin said. “I felt like if I wanted to do this, this is what I had to do.”
Morikawa had multiple options to consider after graduating from high school. USC seemed attractive since her mother, Debbie, is an alumnus. In the end, Collin opted for UC-Berkeley. In college, he established himself as a top-tier player, and to the outside world, he seemed poised to turn pro. Internally, however, Collin didn’t feel ready.
“I definitely would have brought it [going pro] even my parents, and I would have thought about it,” he said. “Yes, maybe my golf game was ready, but I wasn’t ready to live that life alone. I didn’t go to a school like Cal to play for a year, get good results, and walk away. It just wasn’t my way of thinking.”
Collin’s assertiveness has paid off as he completes his education and looks set to star on the PGA Tour for many years to come. After winning the 2021 Open Championship, Collin thanked his loved ones for their unwavering support.
“I wouldn’t be here without my family, my friends, my parents, my brother, Kat, my girlfriend,” he gushed. “I love you guys so much.”
