The shocking story of Beth Thomas first aired in the 1992 documentary titled son of fury. In the documentary, Thomas told his psychologist that he wanted to stab his adoptive parents and his brother to death in the night. He also admitted to sexually abusing his younger brother, killing a bird’s nest and torturing the family dog.
Beth Thomas was just six years old when she made the startling confessions. The badly injured boy had repeatedly tried to kill her brother by pushing him down the stairs and smashing his head on the concrete floor.
Beth Thomas has made a full recovery and is a celebrated nurse and writer.
Beth has recovered from her Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) diagnosis and currently works as a nurse.
Beth Thomas was diagnosed with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), a rare condition in young children characterized by an inability to form healthy connections with caregivers due to extreme abuse. RAD commonly appears in adopted children, who display destructive and self-injurious behavior and do not get along with their new parents and pets.
Thomas developed the condition following neglect and abuse by his biological father. Connell Watkins assumed the care of Beth Thomas with the permission of her adoptive parents and set out to reverse Beth’s condition.
Watkins placed severe restrictions on Beth to teach her empathy and compassion. Within a year, Beth had stopped self-injuring, she was showing remorse for the way she had treated her brother, and she had developed empathy.
By the time he reached adulthood, the diagnosis of RAD seemed like a distant nightmare. She studied nursing and is the author of a book titled More than a thread of hope with his adoptive mother. In celebration of her efforts as a nurse at Flagstaff Medical Center, Beth won a Modern-Day Florence Nightingale Nursing Excellence Award. The winning biography of her in nurse.com read:
“One of Thomas’ most striking attributes as a mentor is her ability to focus and build on existing strengths. She handles confrontation, correction, and mistakes in a consistently positive manner, invariably fostering professional growth and learning. Thomas is humble and never flaunts the fact that she is a supremely intelligent and talented clinician.”
“I love being a NICU nurse, and to be rewarded for doing what I love is an absolute honor,” she said. Thomas and his mother, Nancy, run a company known as Families By Design. The company helps families deal with children diagnosed with RAD.
Beth Thomas was sexually abused by her biological father for up to 19 months
Beth Thomas’s young life changed after her mother passed away when she was one year old. She was left in the care of her father, who sexually abused her for months. She also neglected her younger brother, Jonathan, who was barely a month old when her mother passed away.
Child services saved Thomas from his father’s hell when he was 19 months old. By then, as Beth’s first adoptive parents discovered, the damage had been done. Tim and Julie Tennent had to lock Beth in her room for the night because they feared she would make good on her threat to stab them in the night.
Jonathan bore the brunt of Beth’s wrath, as she routinely tried to end his life. If it hadn’t been for Julie’s quick intervention, Beth would have killed Jonathan by hitting his head repeatedly against the concrete floor.
At their wits’ end, Tim and Julie allowed a psychologist, Connell Watkins, to care for Beth and facilitate her recovery. Fortunately, the ‘girl of anger’ no longer bears the burden of her father’s actions.
Beth Thomas is happily married and resides in Flagstaff, Arizona. She and her secretive husband were married on November 18, 2016. Thomas has chosen a secret life away from social media and therefore we cannot know if she has a child.
