Michael Arden won his first Tony Award tonight and at one point during his speech he was muted by CBS even though he received enthusiastic applause from the audience.

The 40-year-old director won the award for Best Musical Direction at the Tony Awards 2023 on Sunday night (June 11) at the United Palace Theater in New York City’s Washington Heights.

Michael, who began his acting career on Broadway, directed the revival of parade.

During his speech, Michael addressed the queer community and said, “When I was a kid, I was called the F-word more times than I can remember.” Just then, the audio signal went silent.
