Under the tutelage of legendary head coach Dean Smith, he amassed an astounding record of 1,863 points, 670 rebounds and 409 assists. He is a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. Davis won the ACC Tournament and played in the NCAA Championship in 1977. Furthermore, he has maintained a close connection with UNC as his nephew, Hubert Davis, is now the head coach of the men’s basketball team.
He was known for his outstanding shooting ability and was named to the All-ACC team twice in 1976 and 1977. Furthermore, Davis was a key player on the United States men’s basketball team that won gold at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

Phil Ford, the second pick in the 1978 NBA draft, said he and Davis have been best friends for more than 50 years since they first met. Ford went on to say, “He was the best man at my wedding and I was the best man at his.” He emphasized their strong closeness by saying, “He loved me and I loved him.” He was a fantastic person who was also a great basketball player.
