Vijay Sharma is an Indian politician, best known for being elected as the Deputy Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh while working with Arun Sau in the ministry of Vishnu Dev Sai. He represents BJP in Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly representing Kawardha Assembly Constituency.

Vijay Sharma was born in 1973 (age 50 years; as of 2023) in Kawardha, Kabirdham, Chhattisgarh. He studied MSc in Physics in 1996 from Pt. Ravi Shankar Shukla University, Raipur, Chhattisgarh. In 2001, he earned a master’s degree in Computer Applications from Madhya Pradesh Bhoj Open University, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. He also did a diploma course in English.

Vijay started his political career from college. In 1989, he took charge of the RSS-affiliated student union Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. Along with this, he also worked as the coordinator of Kawardha Nagar unit. In 1993, he remained active in the student organization. In 2004, he served as the District President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in Kabirdham district. He is currently the General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Chhattisgarh and has previously held the post of President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in Chhattisgarh. His political influence increased and in 2011 he became the District General Secretary. He was a member of the District Panchayat twice. In 2016, he was appointed State President of Yuva Morcha in Chhattisgarh.
Politics
In 2018, Vijay had contested the assembly elections against Congress minister Mohammad Akbar. However, Akbar won the seat with a significant lead of over 59,000 votes, the largest margin in that election. In 2020, Sharma started his political career as a member of the District Panchayat in Kabirdham. Before him, his wife also held the same post. In the 2023 assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) selected him for the Kabirdham assembly seat. He won by 39,592 votes, defeating previous MLA and Congress minister Mohammad Akbar. Already under consideration for the role of Deputy Chief Minister, he was sworn in as the second Deputy Chief Minister during the Chief Minister’s inauguration ceremony on 13 December 2023.
Controversy
In October 2021, there was a clash in Kawardha over a religious flag and several people including former Chief Minister Raman Singh’s son Abhishek Singh and Rajanandgaon MP Santosh Pandey were made accused. More than 80 people faced charges. Sharma was arrested for allegedly inciting violence but was later released on bail. According to a senior district police official, 73 of the 82 accused have been arrested.

The biggest issue is Akbar’s politics due to which people are living in fear and terror. They (Congress) have misused the law, although he is the Law Minister. People called me and said they would support me. The biggest public issue of Kawardha is the fight for self-respect and the fight for liberation to end terrorism. It has never seen curfew or use of tear gas. Many people went to jail while many were lathicharged.
