Facts/General Knowledge
- When he was 7 years old, he joined a wrestling training center which was located in Lalpur, Varanasi, 22 km away from his village. He used to go to the training center daily by bicycle. Sometimes, he would take a lift to reach the training centre. At that time the financial condition of his family was also not good. His family was not able to provide him proper diet during his early years of training. So, Vijay shifted to a hostel at the Sports Authority of India’s Lucknow centre. Recalling those days in an interview, he said,
Our financial condition was not good, it improved a little when my brother got a job in the Indian Army. The second brother is a bus driver. I have worked very hard to reach here. I have won many gold and silver medals in All India University Championships as well as Junior and Senior National Championships. I have also participated in the Asian Games and won gold medals in the Commonwealth Judo Championships in 2018 and 2019.
- In 2020, during an interview, Vijay shared that he wanted to participate in the Tokyo Olympics, but he could not qualify. He said,
The toughest time was when I could not qualify for Tokyo Olympics 2020. Now, I am fully prepared to face any challenge. I will definitely win a gold medal in my first appearance at the Commonwealth Games. My next goal will be to win gold in the Paris Olympics. After winning a medal in the upcoming Commonwealth Games, I will request the state government to give me a job so that I can continue my practice without any financial hindrance.
