Vijay Kumar Sinha is an Indian politician and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was elected MLA from Lakhisarai in 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2020. He held the post of Speaker in Bihar Legislative Assembly from 2020 to 2022. He resigned from this role after a no-confidence motion was brought against him. The then ruling Grand Alliance. He has served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly (2022–2024) and the Minister of Labor Resources (2017–2020), Government of Bihar. He started serving as one of the Deputy Chief Ministers of Bihar along with Samrat Chaudhary under the leadership of Nitish Kumar as Chief Minister in 2024.

Vijay Kumar Sinha was born on Monday, 5 June 1967 (age 56 years; as of 2023) in his maternal grandfather’s village Tilakpur, Chanan Lakhisarai, Bihar. His zodiac sign is Gemini. His family hails from Badpur in Mokama block of Patna district of Bihar. He did Diploma in Civil Engineering from Government Polytechnic, Barauni, Begusarai (1989). He was an active member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the RSS, during his college days. He became a volunteer of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in his early days.
In 1982, he served as the Secretary of Durga Puja Committee, Barh. In 1983, he began his active participation in student politics by joining the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad at ANS College, Barh. In 1985, he was the President of the Government Polytechnic Muzaffarpur Students’ Union and the Secretary and Working President of the Bihar Polytechnic Students’ Union. In 1988 he became the General Secretary of the Unemployed Bihar Junior Engineers Association.

Vijay Kumar Sinha entered politics by joining BJP in 1988. Subsequently, he held various positions, including General Secretary of Unemployed Bihar Junior Engineers Association (1988), President of Ward-8 Rajendra Nagar Mandal, Patna Metropolitan City (1988), Vice President Rajendra Nagar Mandal, Patna Metropolitan BJP (1990), and President of Lok Nayak Mandal, Patna Metropolitan BJP (1992). In 2010, Vijay Kumar Sinha was re-elected MLA from Lakhisarai by defeating RJD candidate Phulaina Singh by 59620 votes. In 2013, he was the Chairman of Sub-Divisional Monitoring Committee, District Lakhisarai. In 2015, he was re-elected as MLA from Lakhisarai by defeating Janata Dal (United) candidate Ramanand Mandal by 6,556 votes. On 29 July 2017, he became the Labor Resources Minister of the Government of Bihar; He served on this post till 16 November 2020. In 2018, he served as the chairman of the monitoring committee of Lakhisarai district.
In 2020, he was re-elected as MLA from Lakhisarai by defeating Congress candidate Amresh Kumar by 10,483 votes. On 25 November 2020, NDA candidate Vijay Kumar Sinha was elected as the Speaker of Bihar Assembly through voice vote amid heavy drama. The election took place amid chaos after the opposition demanded that it be held by secret ballot. Additionally, the Rashtriya Janata Dal-led grand alliance objected to the presence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar during the voting, saying he was not a member of the House. The Chairman rejected the demands, leading to protests by the opposition and the House had to be adjourned during this time. In the 243-member assembly, Sinha got 126 votes in favor while 114 members voted against him, out of a total of 240 members who participated in the voting.
On 24 August 2022, Sinha resigned from the post after a 20-month tenure as Speaker, after a no-confidence motion was moved against him by the then ruling Grand Alliance. After this, Nitish established a grand coalition government with RJD and Congress. In a surprise twist, the BJP named Sinha as the Leader of the Opposition (LOP) on August 24, 2022, ahead of expected choices like former deputy CM Tarkishore Prasad and Renu Devi. Sinha’s selection marked him as the third upper caste leader chosen by the BJP for the role since 1995, after Yashwant Sinha and Ashwini Kumar Choubey.
On 28 January 2024, Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha took oath as the new Deputy Chief Ministers of Bihar after CM Nitish Kumar took his routine U-turn and joined hands with the BJP once again.

- In 2016, he served as the Chairman of the Governing Body of Rajeshwar Lal College (R.Lal College), Lakhisarai.
- In March 2021, Sinha was criticized by the opposition for his inadequate response to the misbehavior of an RJD and a Congress MLA in the Assembly complex after the House passed the Special Armed Police Act. The act expanded police powers to conduct warrant-less searches and arrests, sparking protests from opposition members. RJD MLAs responded by approaching Sinha’s seat, tearing documents and surrounding his office, effectively trapping him inside. The situation escalated to such an extent that the police had to intervene and physically remove the protesting MLAs, some of whom were forcibly carried on stretchers.
