Vijay Barse was born in 1945 (age 75 years; as in 2020) in Nagpur city of Maharashtra. Vijay Barse’s journey began as a sports professor at Hillshop College, Nagpur, where he served for 36 years. On the afternoon of a rainy day in July 2001, he took shelter under a tree and watched a group of slum children playing football with a broken plastic bucket, and he realized that this was a great opportunity for those children. Growing up in an underprivileged background, Barse was inspired to start a foundation for youth from slums and streets.
After his retirement, he received a sum of Rs. For Rs 18 lakh he bought the land, which was about 9 km from Nagpur. Vijay along with Rachna (his wife) used that land to build a football academy and founded “Slum Soccer – Krida Vikas Sanstha Nagpur (KSVN)”. KSVN runs football programs and rehabilitates members of the underprivileged society.
The first tournament of Slum Soccer was held in Nagpur with the participation of 128 teams. He started his first slum football tournament, a state-level event in Nagpur in 2003. A total of 15 districts of Maharashtra, including the tribal belt of Gadricholi (which later became the champion), participated in this tournament. In the same year, the All India Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Slum Football Tournament (national level) was held in Nagpur with the participation of 12 Indian states (Orissa won the inaugural tournament). In 2006, Vijay learned about the ‘Homeless World Cup’ and went to Cape Town, South Africa to watch its fourth edition. The following year, India participated in the next edition of the tournament held in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Vijay Barse belongs to a Hindu family. There is not much information about his parents and siblings. He is married to Rachna Barse (professor), and the couple have two sons, Priyesh Barse and Dr. Abhijeet Barse (social activist, entrepreneur).

Facts/General Knowledge
- In 2006, Vijay Barse’s son, Abhijeet came to India from the US to help his father pursue his mission of upliftment and rehabilitation of slum dwellers and underprivileged children in the society. The following year Abhijeet became the CEO of Slum Soccer.
- In an interview, Abhijeet claimed that apart from slum soccer, his father (Vijay Barse) had also worked for India-Pak peace and organized motorcycle expeditions to the border for peace talks. Vijay has also worked to improve green cover by promoting tree plantation.
