Vidit Gujarati is a famous Indian chess player. He achieved the title of Grand Master in January 2013, becoming the thirtieth player from India to achieve the title.

Vidit Gujarati was born on Monday, 24 October 1994 (age 26 years; as in 2020) in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. His full name is Vidit Santosh Gujarati. Their zodiac sign is Scorpio. He completed his schooling from Fravashi Academy, Nashik. He started coaching for chess at a very young age and his hard work paid off when in 2006 he stood second in the Asian Youth Championship in the Under-12 category.

After completing his schooling, Vidit started his coaching in chess at a very young age and in 2006, he stood second in the Asian Youth Championships in the U-12 category and received the title of FIDE Master. In 2008, Vidit earned the title of International Master by scoring 7 out of 13 in the Velammal 45th National A Chess Championship, Chennai. In the same year, he became the first Indian to win the World Youth Championship in the Open U14 category. In 2011, during the World Junior Chess Championships, Vidit earned his first norm for the title of Grand Master with a score of 8 out of 11. After achieving his second GM norm at the Nagpur International Open, Vidit earned his final GM norm in the eighth. Round of the Rose Valley Kolkata Open Grandmaster Tournament in 2012. This helped him achieve the title of Grand Master in January 2013. Over the years, Vidit was trained by many chess masters like IM Anup Deshmukh, IM Roktim Bandopadhyay and GM Alon Greenfield. Vidit reached a peak Elo rating of 2726 in September 2020 and holds a world ranking of 24.

Controversy

In 2018, Vidit Gujarati was in Makati, Philippines for the Asian Championships when he had to leave the venue to buy water along with his compatriots Abhijeet Kunte and Lalit Babu when the group was attacked by unknown assailants. Vidit posted about the incident saying that he was surrounded and then attacked. They managed to escape from the situation and saved themselves from the goons. He also informed the World Chess Federation FIDE about the problems related to the facilities provided to the players. Players had to pay $150 for a room with poor facilities, improper food and cleanliness. FIDE Director General Emil Sutowski took notice and he contacted officials regarding the complaints.
