Vanessa Hudson News

When Alan Joyce leaves his position as CEO of Qantas in November, Vanessa Hudson has been named to succeed him. She was chosen from a pool of around 40 candidates from all over the world and will make history as the national carrier’s first female CEO in its 103-year existence.

The board “firmly feels” that Ms Hudson, who has worked for the organisation for 28 years in a number of key capacities, is the “right person to take Qantas forward,” according to Qantas Chairman Richard Goyder.

The Transport Workers Union (TWU) claims she faces a “uphill” road to “rebuild” the corporation as she assumes the top position at a time when Qantas’s reputation requires improvement. Ms. Hudson earned a business degree from the University of Technology Sydney in 1991, and the following year she started working as an auditor for the sizable accounting firm Deloitte.

She began working for Qantas in 1994 as an internal audit supervisor before moving up to the commercial division as a financial controller. She was hired as the catering product manager in 1997, which marked the beginning of her tenure in product services and led to her promotion to executive manager of product and services in 2005.

Qantas stated that Ms. Hudson “oversaw a transformation in catering, airports, and network aimed at driving better commercial and customer outcomes” in her capacity.

Before returning to Sydney as the executive manager of sales and distribution in 2016, where she was in charge of the airline’s income through all sales channels, she travelled to Los Angeles in 2013 to take a senior vice-president position with the airline’s Americas division.

Ms. Hudson was appointed chief customer officer in February 2018 and is now in charge of Qantas’ whole customer service and strategy. Additionally, she was appointed chief financial officer of the Qantas Group in October 2019.

Just a few months before the COVID-19 pandemic brought the airline industry to a halt, Ms Hudson started serving as CFO.

Together with Mr. Joyce, she led the business through rough waters that resulted in the cancellation of almost all of its international flights and the early retirement of its famed Boeing 747 fleet. The airline stored its 12 Airbus A380s, writing down the value of its assets by $1.4 billion.

In June 2020, Qantas announced hundreds of layoffs affecting every aspect of the firm. A month later, the airline reported a $2 billion loss for the 2019–2020 fiscal year. Internal calculations revealed Qantas had suffered around $16 billion in lost sales during the previous financial year, which was marginally less at $1.73 billion.
