Family
His father’s name was Uyyalawada Peddamalla Reddy. He had two brothers who were elder to him. He married Siddhamma, Peramma and Obulamma, with whom he had three sons; Dora Subbaiah and two others and a daughter.
story of rebellion
The East India Company introduced the Permanent Settlement Agreement in 1803 in the Madras Presidency, replacing the agrarian socio-economic situation with a more equal arrangement. According to the agreement, the heirs were evicted from their lands and the village heads were deprived of being landholders and collecting revenue. After a certain age the landlords were stripped of their land and allotted a pension. However, the pension was meager. When the British captured the region of Rayalaseema, Narasimha refused to share the income from the region. Narasimha Reddy was the military governor of Rayalaseema. He took charge of 66 villages including Cuddapah, Anantapur, Kurnool etc. Narasimha Reddy protested with 5000 people against the system of the East India Company.
To defeat the British he resorted to proxy war. On 10 June 1846, Narasimha attacked the treasury of Koilakuntla and moved to Cumbum. He started a rebellion against the East India Company by killing a ranger Rudra Ram. The District Collector took the rebellion seriously and sent Watson (an officer) to arrest Narasimha Reddy. However, Watson failed to arrest him. The British paid Rs. Announced. Rs 5000 for Reddy’s tip. Rs 10,000 for his head. On 23 July 1846, Narasimha Reddy along with his army attacked the British army at Giddalur in Andhra Pradesh. To arrest Narasimha Reddy, the British Army captured his family in Cuddapah. To liberate his family he went to Nallamala forest. When the British came to know about his hiding in the forest, they intensified their action around the forest due to which Narasimha Reddy came back to Koilkuntla.
When the British administration came to know about Narasimha Reddy’s whereabouts, they completely cordoned off the area and at midnight on 6 October 1846, Narasimha Reddy was arrested. He was accused of murder and treason and sentenced to death. After being arrested, he was beaten badly and tied with thick chains. They were then wrapped in blood stained clothes and taken to the streets of Koilkuntla so that no one would dare to rebel against British law. Apart from Narasimha Reddy, 901 people were accused of conspiring against the British. However, 412 people were later acquitted, 273 people were released on bail and 112 people were found guilty and faced life imprisonment. Narasimha was publicly hanged at Koilkuntla at 7 am on 22 February 1847.
