- Kim joined FC Tokyo in January 2010 and made his professional debut on March 20 against Gamba Osaka. His first goal for FC Tokyo was on 6 June 2010 against Kyoto Sanga FC in the J. League Cup. He made 23 league appearances in his first season with the club. However, after placing 16th in the table, the team was relegated to second place.

- On 2 July 2012, Kim signed a four-year contract with Chinese Super League club Guangzhou Evergrande for a reported fee of $2.5 million. Three days later, he made his debut in the Chinese league, drawing 0-0 with Tianjin Ted.
