Usher talks about winning ‘bidding war’ against Justin Timberlake to sign Justin Bieber
While everyone knows Usher mentored Justin Bieber, the R&B star recently recalled having a bidding war with Justin Timberlake over who could hire the younger Justin.
Usher said PEOPLE made sure to introduce Bieber to Scooter Braun, the other half of Raymond Braun Media Group, in 2008. “When you’re at the top of your game, some of the best things are going to come your way,” Usher explained. “And it was, I think, right after [my album] Confessions who introduced me to Justin Bieber and Scooter Braun.”
Also speaking about his friendship with Braun, Usher said: “We built a friendship, but this would obviously create a partnership that would last us forever, and it was kind of a bidding war between Justin Timberlake and I.”
Usher later admitted that he didn’t necessarily know how to approach Bieber about signing his group. “I thought, I’m not sure I can understand each and every producer this artist could benefit from,” he said. “But what I can tell you is that I will give you my passion and everything I have to offer.”
Usher assured Scooter Brauns that he could manage Bieber
Usher explained that he was so willing to sign Bieber with Braun because there could only be “one Justin.”
“So if you want to go with Justin, that’s Justin and Justin. “Yo, he’s just a Justin,” he continued. “So that obviously created a relationship and [there was] That support from him as an entrepreneur, because I think he was also trying to find himself.”
As for reassuring Braun about the deal, Usher said he believed in the producer. “I will give you all the wisdom I have and I will make you grow,” he recalled telling Braun. “And support you in whatever you’re trying to accomplish as a businessman.”
Usher then added what else he said to Braun. “You’re not just a guy who can discover artists. You are someone who just needs someone to believe in, and I believe in him and I will support you.”
