He first started playing professional cricket in 2017, when he represented Jammu and Kashmir at the Under-19 level. Unfortunately, he could not be included in the playing eleven at that time. His coach expressed regret by saying this

“They didn’t give him a long rope. So, he was disappointed, but then, for us, the challenge was to ensure that he did not lose the plot.

One day, while he was practicing in the nets, he was noticed by the then Assam team coach and former Indian wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra, who found his bowling impressive. He questioned the team officials and his coach about why he was not playing in domestic level competitions. Randhir had no answer. But soon he was selected in the Jammu and Kashmir squad to match against the Railways team in a T20 match in the Syed Mushtaq Trophy on 18 January 2021.

Parvez Rasool was the captain of his team. After winning the toss, they opted to bowl first considering the lush green wicket of Aloor Cricket Ground (Bengaluru). Railways had a good start and scored 104 runs at the loss of one wicket. In the 14th over, Umran clean bowled his captain Karn Sharma. Three balls later, he got his second wicket in the form of Mrinal Deodhar. After a few overs, he took another wicket in the 16th over. In this way, in his four over spell, he completed 24 runs for three wickets with an economy of six per over. After the match, Pervez Rasool, who also played two international games for India, commented,

“He is a really good talent, who has the potential to go very far. In the nets, he often used to hit the ball on the helmets of the batsmen. With time, he will definitely improve further.”

When Umran played this game, Irfan Pathan was the mentor of his team. His coach Randhir said,

“Irfan is a top-class fast bowler, he saw the potential in Umran and he started mentoring young cricketers and that boosted his confidence.”

Pathan is the first person who started honing this talent at a high level. He, along with the team’s head coach Milap Mewada, wanted to give them maximum time to prepare for the upcoming tournaments. But since there were protests in Kashmir against the implementation of Article 370 in their area, curfew was imposed in the state. Due to this, the entire training camp was closed till further orders and the players were sent back to their homes. Then JKCA CEO Syed Ashiq Bukhari took up the responsibility of bringing the players to the training camp. He instructed the district police to personally go to the homes of each player and bring them safely to the camp. A few months after reaching the camp, Umran played his first 50-over List-A match on 22 February 2021 against the Bengal team in the Vijay Hazare Trophy held at the Videocon Academy Ground, Kolkata. He could not bowl as expected and gave away 98 runs in ten overs with an economy of 9.8. However, he managed to take one wicket. Jammu lost this match by 82 runs. Soon, after being selected as the net bowler in IPL 2021, he was seen troubling their star batsman David Warner with his raw pace, to which Pathan later said,

“He is still a work in progress and still needs to play a lot of domestic cricket to get better. But he is a real talent and has potential.”

After this he played his first IPL match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Dubai International Stadium in UAE. He was selected over injured Sandeep Sharma. Batting first, his team scored 115 runs. In reply, when Umar got a chance to bowl the first over of the Indian Premier League, Kolkata’s score was 11 runs without any loss. He troubled his batsmen Shubhman Gill and Nitish Rana with his bouncers and bowled at an average speed of over 145 kmph. Although he gave nine runs in that over. Then he was more effective in the second over and as a result he scored 27 runs in four overs. Although he could not take any wicket, his speed and accuracy impressed everyone.

Former Zimbabwean cricket commentator Pommy Mbangwa commented,

“Where was this guy.”

Famous commentator Harsha Bhogle tweeted,

“It’s good to see a young man like Umran Malik with some serious perspective.”

Whereas former Indian bowler Vinay Kumar said,

“Glad to see a young player bowling at such fast pace. His future looks very bright.”

Even former Indian Test cricketer and current commentator Aakash Chopra tweeted,

“Umran Malik…the first over was impressive and he has already bowled the fastest ball by an Indian in IPL 2021.”

  • After his first IPL match on 3 October 2021, where Umran clocked speeds of over 150 kmph, his team captain and star batsman Kane Williamson commented,

“He is a special talent. I believe that being where we are is certainly not desirable, but we are capable of uncovering a ‘no’. The number of young players and as we have been saying, the talent in India is certainly modest. There are a lot of young guys who are ready to go out there and get some experience and it will be much better for their careers. Yes, Umran is something special and great that he was able to run tonight, it was a great opportunity for him.
