More than a dozen people are currently recovering following a tram accident at Universal Studios Hollywood over the weekend.
The tram accident occurred during one of the tours of the park’s studios. The Los Angeles County Fire Department reportedly responded to the park shortly after 9 p.m.
Authorities told media outlets that most of the injuries were minor. However, a park visitor’s injuries were considered critical.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department shared that the incident occurred in the rear parking lot of Universal Studio Hollywood.
“The tram had just passed Jurassic Park Cars and was turning to head north on Avenue M. For unknown reasons,” the statement read.
“While turning onto Avenue M, the last car of the streetcar collided with a metal guardrail on the right side of the road, causing it to tilt and eject several passengers from the streetcar.”
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that 15 passengers were transported to local hospitals for medical treatment and evaluations with minor to moderate injuries.
“The cause of the accident is under investigation,” the statement added. “Alcohol and drugs are not considered a factor in the accident.”
Universal Studios confirmed that the tram incident took place and that there were multiple minor injuries. “We are working to support our guests and understand the circumstances that led to the accident.”
The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the incident.
Witness reveals more details about Universal Studios tram accident
One of the park-goers on one of Universal Studios’ last trams of the night revealed more details about the tram accident. Los Angeles Times. She and her family had boarded the tram at 8:30 p.m.
Although she was not on the tram that crashed, she said her and her family’s tram was not far from the scene. She remembered that when her tram was passing by the King Kong and T. rex attraction, she suddenly stopped.
“We thought, ‘Okay, maybe they’re having a hard time,'” said park visitor Rebecca Miller. “And then as it went on, I thought, this is a little strange.”
Miller and his family then noticed changes in the behavior of park employees. “Then their radios started receiving messages and we noticed a complete change in their behavior.”
They were stuck on the tram until around 10:15 pm. Miller and her family had been at Universal Studios for a Girl Scout event. They remained in the park after the tram incident.
