Top Guns Actress Kelly McGillis said she was not asked to return for the upcoming sequel, Top Gun: Maverick – She didn’t expect it. In Tony Scott’s 1986 original film, McGillis played Charlie Blackwood, a civilian instructor at a fighter pilot training school, and Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in training at the school.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Top Gun: Maverick Three years after the first movie, Maverick is still the captain and fighter pilot. First trailer Top Gun: Maverick Debuting at San Diego Comic-Con, it sees Maverick back in the pilot’s seat on his motorcycle and promises another intense volleyball game. There’s no sign of Charlie, though, and Jennifer Connelly will instead play Maverick’s new love interest in the film.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, McGillis said she was not invited to return Top Guns: Maverick, clear,”I’m old, I’m fat, I look good for my age, but that’s not the whole scene.At 62, McGillis is five years older than star Tom Cruise. She seems happy to put drama aside as she’s now largely retired from acting to focus on her family life and her two daughters.”I’d rather feel completely safe in my own skin and who I am and my age than place value on everything else.“McGillis explained. McGillis went on to explain that she left Hollywood for no particular reason, but “wake up‘ and found her priorities changed, as she decided to focus more on her family and home life instead of trying to maintain popularity. She also said she is not sure if she will appear on the red carpet or any press conferences. Top Gun: Maverickand revealed that she hasn’t actually seen the movie’s trailer.
As McGillis’ successor as love interest, Connelly will play a single mother who owns a local bar and travels from Top Gun: Maverick She is said to be riding in the back of a Maverick motorcycle. Cruise said Connery was “aperfect“for the role and describe her as”very talented and very active“
Top Gun: Maverick Aside from Cruise, there are only two other returning cast members (at least, we know): Val Kilmer returns as Iceman and Tom Skerritt returns as Viper. Aside from what was revealed in the trailer, not much is known about the sequel’s plot, but hopefully we’ll know more soon.
