I’ve had to announce changes to DoorDash for almost ten years, but this is the most challenging one. We are saying goodbye to many great coworkers and reducing our corporate staff by about 1250 individuals as of right now. I am aware that the news we received today will come as a shock to many of you, especially in light of the fact that our company is still going strong and expanding. I believe it is crucial that I discuss how I came to this conclusion, what we are doing for people leaving DoorDash, and why I am hopeful about the future of our company.

As with anything, I want to start by addressing the issues that were within our power to influence today’s statement and accepting responsibility for this choice. DoorDash was essentially an undersized business before COVID-19. The epidemic provided unexpected and unheard-of chances to meet the changing needs of businesses, customers, and Dashers. In order to keep up with our expansion, we accelerated hiring, and in response to public input, we launched numerous additional businesses.

While we’ve always been strict in how we controlled our business and operational KPIs, we weren’t as disciplined as we should have been in how we managed our team growth, even if the majority of our investments are paying off. That’s my fault. Operating costs thus increased quickly.

Let’s now take note of the overall scenario. Although our company has been more resilient than other e-commerce businesses, we are still vulnerable to outside threats, and growth has slowed down compared to our previously rapid rates. Given how quickly we hired new employees, even if our business is still expanding quickly, our operational costs would eventually outpace our income.

This was not a decision I made lightly. Our non-headcount running costs have been cut, and we will keep doing so, but that won’t be enough to cover the gap. I ultimately had to make the tough choice to cut the size of our crew as a result of this harsh truth.
