Toby Keith, country music singer-songwriter, dies at 62

Country star Toby Keith, known for hits like “Red Solo Cup” and “How Do You Like Me Now?!” has died. He was 62 years old.

As confirmed by his family, the singer-songwriter “passed away peacefully” on Monday night after a two-year battle with stomach cancer.

“Toby Keith passed away peacefully last night on February 5th surrounded by his family,” Keith’s loved ones wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.”

Toby Keith was first diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2022. The following year, he spoke about his condition at the People’s Choice Country Awards.

“I feel pretty good,” said Keith, whose tumor was shrinking at the time. MY! News. “It’s like a roller coaster. You have good days and, you know, you’re up and down, up and dressed. It’s always zero to 60 and 60 to zero, but today I feel good.”

At the time, Toby Keith explained that of all his life’s accomplishments, his songwriting was the one he was most proud of. “Those years of playing those songs and remembering where you were when each one was conceived and everything, it’s incredible,” he said.

The country star would no doubt be proud to know, then, that his fans remember him for precisely that.

“Rest in peace to a damn legend. Raising a solo red cup today,” one fan wrote. “RIP to one of the legends of country music. “Now let me raise my ‘Red Solo Cup’ in honor of him, the staple of the party,” said another.

“Man…Toby was a really great musician, he had a lot of songs that I still love to listen to today when I’m in a country arrangement. But ‘Courtesy of Red, White, & Blue’ is always one of my favorites. “Hearing that might make you want to run through brick walls, waving an American flag, while eagles fly with you,” added another.
