Shark attack
Bethany experienced a shark attack while surfing at Tunnels Beach in Ha’ena, Kauai. She was only 13 years old at the time and surfed with Alana Blanchard, her best friend, Blanchard’s father and brother. Bethany lost her left arm to an attack by a 14-foot-long tiger shark.
While lying on her board, Bethany felt a sudden, intense pressure on her left arm and was dragged back and forth for a few seconds. It was before she passed the gust. At first she didn’t feel pain, but she noticed that the water around her was turning red. After a while, her friends, surprised, realized that her left arm had been cut off almost to her shoulder.
Her best friend’s dad made a quick tourniquet with his surfboard leash and led everyone to shore. They rushed Bethany to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. There they took her father out of the operating room where they were going to have knee surgery.
Bethany had already lost 60% of her blood when they arrived at the hospital. Additionally, Bethany suffered hypovolemic shock and underwent several surgeries. Despite the life-threatening shark incident, Bethany’s love of surfing didn’t end there. She returned to surfing after a month off. Later, she returned to participating in surfing events.
