The possibility of another The Vampire Diaries spin-off has fans remembering the iconic series and characters like Lorenzo St. John, who may have entered late in the game, but he became an immensely important and popular character in a short period of time. Enzo was introduced as Damon’s betrayed friend from their Augustine days, but he became Bonnie’s soul mate and lover, much to audience’s joy.
Despite being well-loved, Reddit has strong opinions about the long-dead vampire and his role in the The Vampire Diaries universe. The most controversial views about Enzo range from his love interests to his whole arc on the show.

Enzo Should Have Been With Lily, Not Bonnie
In a surprising twist of events, the very handsome and available Enzo was in love with Damon’s mother Lily, who had saved his life, but fans still thought that the pairing with Lily made more sense than Bonnie. A deleted Redditor said, “I find it believable that Enzo will fall in love with the woman who saved his life than falling in love with a girl who barely had friendly interaction with.”
Enzo seemed more infatuated with Lily than in love, and a lot of his gratitude for being saved would have figured into his feelings for her. Lily and Enzo were completely incompatible, and she didn’t care for him that way. He deserved someone like Bonnie who loved him passionately.
Enzo Was Obsessed With The Salvatores
Since his tryst with Damon at Augustine, Enzo’s life seemed to be entwined with the Salvatores. He considered Damon his best friend, hated Stefan, and fell in love with Lily, their mother. Reddit’s Andrezie pointed out “Enzo’s obsession with the Salvatores was a bit weird.”
Enzo had never known family in his life, and the first taste of affection he got was from Lily, who saved him from certain death. Coincidentally, his next encounter at Augustine was with Damon. If anything, the Salvatore brothers and mother pulled him into their orbit, which they had a habit of doing with people.
Enzo And Caroline Made More Sense Than Him And Bonnie
An eternal flirt, many Redditors observed the banter between Caroline and Enzo in season 6 and concluded that their ship made a lot more sense than Bonnie and Enzo. Mariejuannaaa exclaimed “I clearly think they have chemistry! I never really loved bonnie and Enzo together.”
There is no denying that Enzo was clearly Caroline’s type, and anybody could love the charismatic blonde vampire on The Vampire Diaries. However, their interaction was just harmless flirting, and Bonnie was the one who actually cared for Enzo, unlike Caroline who was just a friend.
Enzo’s Sudden Redemption Was The Worst
His first incarnation on TVD was of a vengeful vampire, and some fans seem to prefer that version of Enzo over the romantic one. He betrayed Caroline and went after Matt, Elena, and Stefan — but in a few episodes, he was a different person. A deleted user rued, “The writing change for Enzo from 7×14 to 7×19 is Absolutely one of the worst character retcons I’ve ever seen pulled in TV.”
Enzo’s redemption and his loving side didn’t happen overnight. There was a time jump of three whole years, and the show depicted how his heart slowly melted as he experienced Bonnie’s tenderness. Just like Bonnie changed, so did he, and if Damon could become a hero, so could Enzo.
All Of Enzo’s Storylines After Augustine Were Silly
The journey that Enzo went through was quite different from the other main characters on the show. He had tragic beginnings, a tortured life, and major trust issues, but users like lldom1987 think that all of his arc were silly and he was underused. They said “Basically erase his entire storyline after the boring Augustine vampire one, and the writers might have been able to develop a character that was actually interesting.”
Just because Enzo wasn’t directly involved in fan-favorite plots doesn’t negate his arc. He was motivated differently and had gained freedom after years of captivity, so he had certain things, like meeting Damon and taking revenge on Stefan in his mind. Sarah Salvatore was key to riling Stefan up, so Enzo did what he had to so he could feel avenged.
Bonnie And Enzo Had No Chemistry
Despite Bonnie and Enzo, fondly known as Benzo, were one of the biggest couples on the show, a faction of the fandom just didn’t see the fireworks. They felt that there was potential, but the underdevelopment of the relationship ruined it. Sassy_dodo said that they were “just put together for the sake of story while ignoring any chemistry or depth.”
Redditors may think other couples were more important, but Bonnie deserved to find a love who cared for her and protected her against the world. She had always been alone, and Enzo showed her that she didn’t have to be. Their relationship was undoubtedly adorable and the chemistry was felt by most viewers.
Enzo’s Death Was Shabbily Done And The Ghost Was Unnecessary
Many hearts broke with that series finale of TVD, but the ultimate kicker came just a bit before that, with Enzo’s death. However, it affected some people differently, who thought that Enzo could have heard Stefan with his vamp hearing and fought him off, or that Damon could have warned him and Bonnie. Mundane_Metal_3634 said “He was pointlessly killed and his death was so dumb,” and that the ghost appearing was a total waste.
No humanity Stefan was ruthless, and few could fight him off. As Enzo waited for Bonnie to come back out, he was not thinking of being attacked, and Bonnie was taking the cure from Elena. Vampires were strong, but not invincible, and Enzo was no match for Ripper Stefan. The ghost was required to give Bonnie some closure, and Enzo helped her through the finale that way.
Enzo Was Just Eye Candy
Redditors like dabzandjabz and lldom1987 just didn’t think very highly of Enzo, outside of being attractive like many other male characters on screen. They felt he was underused by the writers, saying “They didn’t know what to do with him the second he was casted,” and “He is an attractive man, but he just didn’t have the it factor…”
The importance of a character is subjective, but Enzo played a vital role in the show. He found his family, liaised with the Armory for the Salvatores, and gave Bonnie the happiness she deserved for seven previous seasons. Just because a character’s ending is tragic does not mean that they are pointless.
Enzo Ran After Every Woman
Despite romance being the crux of The Vampire Diaries, Enzo’s character upset some viewers who thought he flirted and tried his luck with everyone on the show, and that was unfair to Bonnie. Lldom1987 opined that she deserved “…a character who wasn’t running after every other woman and being rejected by them before settling on Bonnie.”
Every character in TVD had romantic histories with each other. Elena had dated Matt, Stefan, and then moved on to his brother. Caroline had dated almost every available man on the show, as did Stefan. Damon and Bonnie herself had many partners, so it seems unfair to vilify only Enzo for flirting a little bit.
Enzo Gave Up On Bonnie Too Easily
Tragically, what was supposed to protect Bonnie ended up almost killing her. As her friends and family looked for ways to help her, Bonnie asked not to be rescued, and fans hated that Enzo actually listened to her. Torib613 was angered by this, saying “After he argued against saving her I was legit looking for the exit, and I was very frustrated that she didn’t dump him right then and there.”
TVD viewers had become very used to characters like Damon not respecting the wishes of their partners and forcing them to do things they thought were better for them. Poor Elena had to suffer through this, but Enzo respected his partner’s wishes, which didn’t make him a bad partner.
