Tariq started his career as a Clinical Registrar at JN Medical College and taught MBBS students there from 1980 to 1983. From 1983 to 1985, he was the CMO of the Medical College. He started working as a surgical specialist at the King Fahd University Hospital (KFHU) in Saudi Arabia in 1985 and worked there for a year. From 1986 to 1993 he worked as an assistant professor at JN Medical College. He has 9 years of experience as an Associate Professor. From 1997 to 1999, he was the Honorary Secretary of the AMU Teaching Staff Association. He became a professor in the Department of Surgery, JN Medical College and worked there for 11 consecutive years from 2002 to 2013. From 2006 to 2009, he was the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at JN Medical College. In 2007, he became the Secretary of the University Games Committee and served in this position until 2014. In 2013, he became the Chief Medical Superintendent at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital. On 17 May 2017, he became the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. He has served as a member of the Indian Medical Council and the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management (Lucknow), the Governing Body of the Maulana Azad Education Foundation (Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India) and the National Monitoring Committee. He has served as President of the Association of Surgeons of India (UP), Secretary of the Aligarh Muslim University Teachers Association. He was elected thrice as a member of the Executive Council of Aligarh Muslim University, where he represented the teaching faculty. When he was the Vice-Chancellor of AMU, he headed the College of Nursing, Para Medical College, Department of Cardiology and Bio-Medical Engineering, Established Center of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence, Green and Renewable Energy and NHM projects like Pediatric Early Intervention Centre, Pediatric Cardiac Evaluation and Cardiac Surgery Center (PCECS), MCH Wing, Dara Shikoh Center for Interfaith Understanding and Dialogue. He also sought approval from the President of India for the Pharmacy Institute. After he became VC, AMU was accredited with A+ grade by NAAC for 5 years, and AMU was listed among the five central universities granted Category II autonomy by the University Grants Commission. Many new courses including DM (Cardiology), MCh (Neurosurgery), MBA (Hospital Administration and Islamic Finance), Masters in Architecture, M.Tech in Solar Energy, Biomedical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Material Sciences, Green were started in the university. Energy and Sustainable Development, Earthquake Engineering and Disaster Management, M.Voc (Hons), B.Tech in Food Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Automobile Engineering (Electrical Vehicles), M.Sc. in digital science, and cyber security and digital forensics. Tariq represented India at the India-Indonesia Inter-Faith Dialogue in Yogyakarta. He was also part of the delegation from the Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India. India’s R20 International Religion Forum Summit in Indonesia in 2018 (part of the G-20 events with the Indonesian presidency of the G-20) in Bali in 2022, a symposium on Higher Education in South Asia was held in Istanbul at Hollings in 2019 By Center for International Dialogue, Washington, USA.

Member of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council

In 2023, he was elected as Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) from BJP by UP Governor Anandibai Patel. After being elected in BJP, he resigned from the post of Vice Chancellor. Tariq said in an open letter to the university’s students and staff,

As I step down, this is the last time I address you as Vice Chancellor. I had the opportunity to serve the organization for six years through good and challenging times.”

Protest against the picture of Mohammad Ali Jinnah in the university

In 2018, AMU students started protests against the portrait of Mohammad Ali Jinnah installed on the university campus. Tariq called it a non-issue and even met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to talk about it. He said that the photo of the founder of Pakistan was in the AMU Students Union office since 1938. A 16-member coordination committee of senior faculty members was formed to prevent students from protesting. Later, violence broke out on the campus when members of the right-wing organization Hindu Yuva Vahini entered the campus and clashed with university students over the presence of the picture. The university students claimed that they were then taken to a police station but were later rescued by other protesters. The students demanded action against the right-wing protesters who raised slogans at the university. He also demanded a judicial inquiry into “police inaction”.

In 2022, Ashok Pandey, national spokesperson of Hindu Mahasabha, accused Tariq of land scam, appointment scam and irregularities in AMU college. Ashok revealed that no action was taken against the people who illegally occupied the land on which AMU was built. He further said that the land was later taken by Tariq and given to his nephew. He also accused him of arranging jobs for his son and daughter-in-law in a medical college.

  • He wrote a letter to the Chief Secretary of UP and the Police Chief, saying that the students protesting against the CAA movement were threatening him and his family. In the letter, he mentioned that he was called an “RSS/BJP member” and a CAA “supporter”.

  • He supported the Agneepath scheme brought for army recruitment in 2022 and asked the youth to participate in it and not oppose it.
  • AMU students claim that Tariq never supported the students of his college and always opposed them. According to the students, during the CAA protests they allowed police and paramilitary forces to enter the university campus and did not stop the police from attacking the students. Aligarh Muslim University has removed the books of two Islamic scholars, Abul Ala al-Mawdudi of Pakistan and Sayyid Qutb of Egypt, from the curriculum of its Islamic Studies department.
