“Obviously, she had one of the best years, if not the best, of any artist right now,” he said. “I don’t see why she wouldn’t be nominated for artist of the year. She really didn’t make any sense to me. It is a lack of respect”.
Punch revealed that it contacted MTV about the category during a call about a possible SZA performance at the awards show, but “they couldn’t give a clear answer as to why she wasn’t there.” [nominated]. It was just, ‘Well, she’s nominated by all these other [awards].’”
SZA’s manager continued, “And they ended up saying, ‘Okay, we could make another call,’ because there were people in [the call] about the logistics of the show that had nothing to do with [the nominations]. When we tried to arrange the second call, they didn’t want to talk about the artist of the year, which for me was really a slap in the face.”
CALL FOR HELP Most notably, it made history as the 21st century’s longest-running number one hit so far on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and went triple platinum. His hit single, “Kill Bill,” peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Why wouldn’t she be nominated for artist of the year?” Punch questioned. “Even with the other artists who were nominated for artist of the year, some of them were even out of cycle. They didn’t release any album. I mean, no disrespect to them or anyone else; everyone’s cool and all, but still, you can’t discredit what CALL FOR HELP “He has done it and is currently doing it.”
SZA did not perform or attend the awards show this year.
Her manager emphasized that she is “a very sweet person and is not in favor of all the nonsense, the politics, the comings and goings and all that. So our feelings may be a little different.”
“But ultimately,” he said, “I felt like it was disrespectful and I was very harsh about it and influenced that. If there is any problem or backlash and all that, I will accept everything.”
SZA has a new song with Drake called “Slime You Out.” Check it out!
