He grew up in Duluth, Minnesota and graduated from the Minnesota State Institute for the Deaf. He later attended the Rochester Institute of Technology and the National Technical Academy for the Deaf. Durant made his television debut in the ABC family teen drama series Switched at Birth, where he played Matthew for 17 episodes.
