Sumit Kumar Ganguly was born on Thursday, 15 April 1982 (age 41 years; as in 2023) in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. His zodiac sign is Aries. He completed his schooling in Mumbai. Sunidhi Chauhan was her classmate and best friend. He did his graduation in commerce from Mithibai College of Arts, Mumbai. Sumit was born to Kishore Kumar and Leena Chandavarkar. His father was a reputed playback singer and actor and his mother is a former Bollywood actress. He was only 5 years old when his father passed away in 1987. Remembering his father, he said in an interview,
I lost my father at the age of five. All I remember about him is as a fun-loving father who pampered me with loads of toys and videos. I was a fat kid and he used to call me ‘Chiballa Bacha’.”
He has a half-brother, Amit Kumar, who is also a notable playback singer. During an interview, Sumit while talking about his brother said,
He is thirty years older than me and he is like a father to me. I consider him my ideal. Not only his singing, but also all his mannerisms constantly remind me of my father – so much so that his voice and mannerisms are very similar to him. I can trust everything to him. He is Cancer and very emotional. Even if he is not happy with any of my work; He would tell me in a roundabout way. He is my go-to guy. Mother may forbid me to do anything but brother always supports me.

In 2002, at the age of 20, he was performing his father’s songs on stage when he was noticed by producer Raju Mavani, who called him to sing for his film Mudda – The Issue, and Sumit made his debut as a playback singer with this film; He sang two songs ‘Deewangi’ and ‘Kaise Main Kahoon’ for the film. Subsequently, in 2004, she received another offer from director Ram Gopal Varma to sing a song for the Abhishek Bachchan starrer Naach (2004); He sang the song ‘Bandhe Lagi’ with Shweta Pandit.
In 2011, he performed a tribute concert, ‘Do Kishore’, with his brother Amit Kumar at various venues.
