Sumalatha married Kannada actor and politician Ambareesh on 8 December 1991. They have a son Abhishek. Abhishek Ambareesh is an Indian actor.

Sumalatha’s husband Ambareesh died due to cardiac arrest on 24 November 2018, days before their 27th wedding anniversary.

His son Abhishek married Indian model and internet personality Aviva Bidapa in 2023.

Sumalatha started her acting career at the age of 15 in 1979 after winning a beauty contest. Initially, his only dream and ambition was to work with veteran actor Kamal Haasan. She started her acting career with the Tamil film Thisai Maria Paravaigal (1979). He has done several Tamil films including Thazvaram (1990), Nair Saab (1989), David David Mr. David (1988) and Isabella (1988). He made his Telugu debut with the film Samajniki Sawal (1979), Kannada debut with the Rajkumar starrer Ravichandra (1980) and Malayalam debut with the film Moorkhan (1980). He has worked with many veteran actors in the South film industry including Rajinikanth, Jayan and Mohanlal. She has worked as the second heroine for Rajinikanth after Rati Agnihotri in films like Murattu Kalai (1980) and Kazhugu (1981). Most of her Telugu films are with veteran actor Chiranjeevi. His off-screen friendship with actress Suhasini Mani Ratnam led to an explicit scene being made in the final cut of the film. This happened when she was combing her friend’s hair on the train to visit the set and the director asked the cameraman to shoot the scene. He has done more than 220 films in his acting career.

Sumalatha began her political career in 2019, announcing that she would contest the 2019 Indian general election in Karnataka as an independent candidate from the Mandya constituency. He was supported officially by BJP members and unofficially by Congress members. There was no BJP candidate from Mandya constituency to show support for him against JDS candidate Nikhil, son of Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy. When she filed her nomination papers on 20 March 2019, she was accompanied by famous actors from the South film industry like Yash and Darshan Thoogudeepa Srinivas. She won the election by a margin of 128,876 votes and became the first independent woman MP from Karnataka.
