Suicide Squad: KTJL’s Battle Pass Can’t Repeat Arkham Knight’s Mistakes

It has seemingly been confirmed that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will have microtransactions and a Battle Pass – and this runs the risk of repeating one of Batman: Arkham Knight’s greatest mistakes. This darker follow-up to Rocksteady’s beloved Batman: Arkham series was first announced back in 2020, and the developer has slowly and steadily revealed more details about Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s story and gameplay in the years since. Players will take control of a madcap quartet of Harley Quinn, Deadshot, King Shark, and Captain Boomerang as they are tasked with eliminating a Justice League corrupted by Brainiac.

The main menu for Suicide Squad: KTLJ has leaked, revealing even more information about the upcoming superhero action title. It is now known that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice will include social media features and matchmaking options for the game’s co-op, and that players will be able to replay missions after completing them via the “Chapter Select” option. This includes the previously shown battle between the Suicide Squad and the Flash, which will take place somewhere early in the game. Finally, the recent Suicide Squad: KTJL leak revealed plans for a Battle Pass and an online store – which has already drawn up a fair amount of controversy across the internet.

Batman: Arkham Knight’s Season Pass Was Divisive

This concern isn’t without precedent, as Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham Knight took a similar approach with its vast amount of DLC to mixed results back in 2015. Arkham Knight featured a Season Pass, which gave players access to Arkham Knight‘s villain-centric Season of Infamy side missions, the Gotham City Stories that shifted the focus toward the other members of the Bat Family, and a wealth of Challenge Maps and character skins from virtually every incarnation of the Batman mythos. However, the Season Pass’s initial $40 price tag drew backlash from players – as well as the belief that much of the content included could have just been sold as an unlockable part of the base game.

Suicide Squad: KTJL Needs To Be Careful With Its Battle Pass

The Batman: Arkham series was no stranger to these kinds of controversies even before the backlash surrounding Arkham: Knight’s Season Pass. A similar pass for 2013’s Batman: Arkham Origins charged players for a series of challenge maps featuring Bruce Wayne before he became Batman, and the otherwise well-received, over 10-years-old Batman: Arkham City caught backlash for initially locking its single-player Catwoman side campaign behind a download.

The conversation regarding DLC Season Passes in video games is ongoing, and not everyone is thrilled at the idea of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League including one given Rocksteady’s approaches to the concept in the past. Hopefully, the developer has learned from Batman: Arkham Knight’s DLC controversies and avoids the issues that plagued that particular title’s Season Pass in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League – such as charging players too much for cosmetic items and important side content.
