Sue Kent has loved BBC Gardeners World since she was a child and has always wanted to be on the popular gardening show.

Sue jumped at the opportunity to submit a video of her garden when BBC Gardeners World requested delivery during the pandemic.

Sue, from Gower, really impressed the BBC and when given the opportunity to host, her wish came true. She is also loved by the audience as she recently took home the prestigious Alan Titchmarsh award.

I’ve been watching it since I was a long time ago and I’ve always wanted to see it. Sue continued: “I thought I should write to them and ask if they would like to visit my garden, but I never thought that was enough.

“And when the epidemic broke out, I had enough time to work so when they asked for delivery, I said now or never. I didn’t expect it to turn out like this.

Due to limited upper extremities, Sue has always had a passion for gardening and is quite particular about tending to her beautiful collection of plants almost exclusively with her feet.

After her mother took the drug Thalidomide during pregnancy to treat morning sickness, Sue was born with eight-inch-long hands, no thumbs, and seven fingers — three on each hand. We moved it away for years so I could work in the garden,” added Sue. I once tried standing on one leg to weed on a slope. I and my feet are like those who use their hands and favor one over the other.

Even so, Sue didn’t let her disability stop her, as evidenced by the fact that she just received the prestigious Alan Titchmarsh New Talent of the Year Award at the annual Garden Media Guild Awards.

Sue has won praise for her contribution to the BBC’s World of Gardeners. According to the BBC, Sue approaches gardening from an angle unfamiliar to many of us but also perfectly relevant, making her articles instantly engaging, interesting, entertaining and educational.

Lee Burkhill, garden designer and horticulture expert, hosted tonight’s awards ceremony, which took place on Zoom.

Sue’s reaction upon receiving the award was as follows: “I am delighted to be shortlisted, shocked to win; this is a great pleasure for me, i have never received an award. The hard learning required to become a presenter is fun, more work than it looks, but utterly satisfying and enjoyable.
