Subodh Kumar Jaiswal was born on Saturday, 22 September 1962 (age 58 years; as in 2020) in Sindri, Dhanbad, Jharkhand. His zodiac sign is Virgo. He did his schooling from CMRI branch of De Nobili, Digwadih, Dhanbad in 1978. He did his graduation in English from DAV College, Chandigarh and later, he did his MBA from University Business School, Panjab University. During his MBA studies, he appeared for the NDA exam thrice, but could not pass the exam. After this he attempted the UPSC exam and passed it.

His father, Shiv Shankar Jaiswal, died in 2008, and was a Food Corporation of India contractor, a businessman, and a philanthropist. Subodh’s mother’s name is Karuna Jaiswal. He has two brothers, Prince and Manoj Kumar Jaiswal (executive vice president at Murugappa Group). His grandfather HN Chaudhary was an excise inspector.

After passing the UPSC examination, he was appointed as Additional Superintendent of Police in Amravati, Maharashtra in 1986. He was appointed as the head of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the High Court in 2003 to investigate crores of rupees. Fake stamp paper scam run by Abdul Karim Telgi. He has also served in the Special Protection Group (SPG), Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). In 2018, he was appointed as the Police Commissioner of Mumbai and in 2019, he served as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra. In May 2021, after several meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and opposition leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, he was appointed as the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation. Initially, three names were shortlisted for the post, which included Kumar Rajesh Chandra (1985-Bihar cadre IPS), VSK Kaumudi (1986-Andhra Pradesh cadre), and Subodh Kumar Jaiswal. On Subodh’s appointment, Secretary ACC Srinivas R Katikithala said,
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the appointment of Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, IPS (MH: 1985) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for two years from the date of assumption of charge, based on the panel recommended by the Committee. - When he was in school and college, he used to participate in various sports like football, badminton and volleyball.
- After being appointed DGP of Maharashtra in 2019, many differences had arisen between Uddhav Thackeray and Subodh. Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis while addressing the media said,
