Gautam Karthik was born on Tuesday, 12 September 1989 (age 34 years; as in 2023) in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu. Gautam did his schooling from Harban International School, Ooty, Tamil Nadu, a boarding school. During an interview, Gautam talked about his experience of studying in a boarding school. He said,
Since I studied in a Christian convent in Ooty and was housed in a hostel, I could not celebrate Diwali with my family in Chennai. There was a rule of ‘no firecrackers’ in the hostel also, so we just sat in the hostel and watched the fireworks in Ooty. After coming to Chennai, Diwali has become a memorable family celebration. This is a new experience for me. This Diwali will be ‘Mersal’.”

In 1992, Gautham Karthik’s father Karthik Muthuraman married Rathi, an actor from the South Indian entertainment industry. Reportedly, Rathi is the younger sister of Karthik Muthuraman’s first wife Ragini Karthik. Karthik Muthuraman talked about this in an interview and said,
Half of it is true. I have two wives. My first wife Ragini has two children, Gautam and Kayan. My second wife is Rathi. They have a son, Dheeran, who is 1 year old. Rathi is Ragini’s younger sister. It is true that when I married Rathi, problems arose between Ragini and me. However, she did not leave me and go to Ooty. She moved to Ooty to send her children to a good school. In 2013, Gautham Karthik made his acting debut with Mani Ratnam’s film Kadal, in which he played the lead role of Thomas; However, the film flopped. In an interview, Gautam Karthik talked about his experience of working in Kadal and said,
Everyone thought that the film would be a big hit and I would become a star overnight. Unfortunately, it didn’t perform as well as we expected, although there are people who like it. But I learned a lot about the filmmaking process. For example, Rajeev Menon used to talk to me in detail about camera angles, lenses and how to light a frame. When I was dubbing for the film, Mani Ratnam used to tell me how he was going to edit the film. Looking back, I feel I got a lot from the film.

In 2014, Gautham worked on the Tamil film Yenamo Yedho, a remake of the Telugu film Ala Modalaandi (2011). Subsequently, he appeared in various Tamil films such as Rangoon (2015), Indrajith (2017), Oru Nalla Naal Pathu Solren (2018), Anandam Vilayedum Veedu (2021), and Yutha Saatham (2022).

Controversy
In 2017, Gautham Karthik was criticized by a section of netizens after making a comment related to the political journey of South Indian actor Rajinikanth. According to sources, Gautam talked about Rajinikanth and said that he should stick to films and avoid getting into politics. However, according to Gautam, his comment was misinterpreted by Rajinikanth’s fans. Later he posted a video on Twitter to clarify his statement about Rajinikanth. In the video, Gautam said, there is a controversy going on over one of my recent statements. I would like to say that this is a complete misunderstanding. I was asked whether I support Rajinikanth sir’s entry into politics. To which I replied that I do not understand politics and I would like to see him only as a superstar. But, my statement was taken out of context and misinterpreted because I did not support his entry. I am here only to be a part of films and I like watching Rajinikanth sir’s films.
