Although SpongeBob is obviously the face of the series, Squidward is a pretty spectacular character in his own right. This is due to the fact that, as the audience ages, it becomes far easier to relate to him and his overall struggles. As a result of this, it is impossible not to feel bad for him at times. In fact, this happens fairly regularly because of all the hardships he faces. He is a character who feels hopeless, and it is very challenging for him to ever feel truly happy; so, naturally, he is the underdog the audience cheers for.
When looking at SpongeBob SquarePants‘ illustrious history, it is clear that the saddest moments of it normally have Squidward as the primary victim. In fact, these depressing scenes are among the most memorable in the series because of the serious impact that they leave. Although there is humor through his struggles at times, most fans will feel deep empathy for Squidward after watching them.

When His Band Crushes His Spirit
After lying to Squilliam about having his own band, Squidward finds himself in quite the pickle. Squilliam books his band to play at the Bubble Bowl, so Squidward acts fast by getting the whole town together in making one.
However, the members of his new band not only are bad at playing music, but they also end up getting into a massive brawl at the last rehearsal. This leads to Squidward crying and thanking them for nothing, as his dream is now crushed. However, SpongeBob does rally them, and they surprise him with a spectacular performance.
When He Becomes Desperate For A Krabby Patty
As a point of pride, Squidward does not admit to SpongeBob that he actually loves Krabby Patties. This becomes a big issue when he craves one to the point where he takes a half-eaten one from the trash.
However, when SpongeBob sees him grab it, he cremates it and cries because it was not finished by the customer. Squidward then cries when he is alone, and it is just so sad. However, he does, of course, end up sneaking into the Krabby Patty vault and eating a bunch of them before they go straight to his thighs… and then he blows up.
When He’s At The Cemetery
After SpongeBob returns the extremely expensive #1 soda drinking hat to Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen’s corpse, Mr. Krabs goes to the cemetery to retrieve it. This is after a group of buyers inform him that they would pay millions for it.
While there, he happens to see Squidward from afar crying at a grave. After getting a closer look, it shows that it says “here lies Squidward’s hopes and dreams.” Mr. Krabs definitely isn’t moved, but the viewers may be.
When Everyone Hates His Talent Show Act
As a way to bring more money into the Krusty Krab, Squidward convinces Mr. Krabs to let him host a talent show. He sees it as a marvelous opportunity to show Bikini Bottom how much of a star he is.
However, once he begins his unique dancing act, the crowd hates it so much that they start pelting him with tomatoes. To make matters even worse, they cheer loudly for SpongeBob when all he does is sweep up the mess.
When He Can’t Find Happiness In His New Home
After seeing an ad about Tentacle Acres, Squidward decides to move there to get away from SpongeBob and Patrick. It seems like the perfect fit for him, as it is full of people just like him while also having interpretative dancing classes and canned bread.
However, the repetitiveness of living there makes Squidward begin to feel sad and dislike the town. It is hard to see, as Squidward finally has happiness, and it just is taken away instantly. Also, he even misses SpongeBob at the end of his time there and uses a reef blower to fly back to Bikini Bottom. In essence, the episode is a commentary on the dangers of getting exactly what you wish for.
When He Is Not Able To Sell His Home
Squidward tries to leave his neighborhood more than once in the series. In this specific episode, he has a real estate agent visit his home to see if she would be willing to sell it. However, in an attempt to get SpongeBob to not ruin things with his annoying behavior, he tells him that it is “opposite day.”
However, SpongeBob and Patrick decide to celebrate the fake holiday by impersonating Squidward when she shows up. They end up driving the real estate agent away when they anger her with all the Squidwards around.
When He Thinks He Killed SpongeBob
After buying SpongeBob a pie, he finds out that it is actually a bomb made by pirates. He assumes that SpongeBob already ate it, so he spends the entire episode partaking in activities with him. While doing so, he understandably feels a lot of guilt, too.
Once sunset comes around, Squidward is crying because he believes that SpongeBob will explode at any moment. The pair count the sunset down, in a very emotional manner, and an explosion occurs. Yet, thankfully it is just from a bubble SpongeBob blows, but it is still impossible not to feel bad for Squidward.
When SpongeBob Shrinks Him
After taking Mermaid Man’s belt, SpongeBob cannot help but use it in the kitchen while at work. When Squidward finds out about it, he tries to call Mermaid Man, SpongeBob shrinks him.
SpongeBob is entirely in the wrong for this and only makes things worse in the process. By the end of the episode, he shrinks the entire town trying to fix what he has done. If he just listened to Squidward, this entire crisis would not have occurred.
When Mr. Krabs Uses Him As Clam Bait
After Mr. Krabs gets his millionth dollar, he takes SpongeBob and Squidward on a boat to celebrate. However, it becomes a real problem when a giant flying clam takes it from his hand and eats it.
This leads Mr. Krabs to eventually make Squidward and SpongeBob be live bait. Of course, the two are not okay with this, but they have no choice because they are tied up. It is impossible not to feel bad for them, even if they escape from it entirely unharmed, as they are extremely scared in the process.
When He Is Lost In The Middle Of Nowhere With SpongeBob And Patrick
When Squidward is walking to work, SpongeBob and Patrick heckle him from a random treehouse. When they tell him that he cannot fit into their club, he climbs up after they continue to tell him not to. This leads to him finding out that there is not enough room for him inside the structure. When he tries to leave, the vine supporting him breaks, and it shoots them into the air.
They land in the middle of a kelp forest and are unable ot find their way out. It is particularly bad for Squidward, though, as he, of course, cannot stand his neighbors. This leads to a lot of overall chaos in the episode as he refuses to participate in the group’s magic conch shell obsession.
