The Oregon Ducks are mourning the tragic death of talented tight end Spencer Webb. Authorities suspect Webb slipped and hit his head on a rockfall in a swimming lake near Eugene, Oregon. Spencer fell about 100 yards while he was climbing a rock.
“[Webb] you were climbing a rock formation or wall and slipped. He hit his head [and] he fell into the water,” said Sgt. Tom Speldrich. Bystanders and paramedics found him unconscious and were unable to revive him.
Spencer’s birth parents abandoned him when he was young.
Spencer Webb was born in 2000 and grew up in Sacramento, California. Webb had a difficult upbringing as his parents abandoned him when he was young.
Webb was initially raised by his grandfather, Donald ‘Spido’ Webb, before passing away when Webb was five years old. “My grandfather was a competitor, he tried to do the best he could, he helped people, he cared about people and I think I’m just like him,” Spencer said, according to the sacramento bee.
After Donald’s passing, Spencer lived with her aunts, uncles, and family friends. The challenging situation forced him to mature faster than his peers.
Spencer saw her father from time to time, but she didn’t have her mother in her life at all. He said:
“I never really had a mom or dad in my life. They chose to do other things, bad things, so it’s been me and my brother. I had a dream, he had a dream and we are making it come true. It doesn’t really bother me now that I don’t know my mom. She missed it.”
Webb’s brother and his wife became his adoptive parents.
After moving around for several years, Spencer settled in with her older brother, Cody Webb, and his wife, Alicia. Given his lack of guidance, Spencer got into mischief.
Cody gave Webb no respite, informing him that he could only play football if he changed his ways. Elder Webb said, for ABC 10:
“I lost a brother, if you will, and gained a son, which is incredible. I tell everyone I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I wanted him to do it under my supervision, so that he would know that at least everything was done in his favor.
It wasn’t easy for the trio to adjust to the unconventional living arrangement. However, as time went by, they found ways to prosper. Spencer’s success on the court made Cody and Alicia’s sacrifice worth it. code said:
“I am definitely proud of him. Just to see how far he’s come, the odds he’s beaten, wow. He tried very hard. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t force it to drink. He is drinking the water. He is reaping the benefits. Many children from homes broken as children do not have a place of peace. Spencer does.
Spencer said that she informed her biological father about the elevated role that Cody had assumed in her life. “I tell him [biological dad] I love him, but he understands the role my brother has in my life, that my brother is my everything,” Spencer said.
“At a very young age, you guys have become the best parents of all time,” Spencer tweeted in September 2017 along with photos of Cody and Alicia. “I love you guys.”
