New photos from the set of Disney’s upcoming Snow White live-action remake have emerged and they are sparking controversy online.
The movie will star Rachel Zegler as the titular character alongside Tony Award-winning actor Andrew Burnap as her leading man.
Neither Rachel or Andrew were seen in the new set photos, but stand-ins were used while seemingly filming rehearsals or footage that might not show their faces.
So, why the controversy?
Head inside to find out why there is so much controversy surrounding the photos…
The uproar is all about the seven actors who are seen playing the roles that traditionally have been referred to as the “Dwarfs” in previous iterations of the story.
The Daily Mail shared the new set photos along with the headline, “EXCLUSIVE: Snow White and the Seven… Politically-Correct Companions? First pictures of new Disney live-action remake show princess walking with diverse band of merry men and women after row over using dwarf actors.”
The photos show a diverse group of actors walking in a line through a field and only one actual dwarf is part of the group.
Conservative media figures like Tomi Lahren and Robby Starbuck have led the uproar on Twitter, calling Disney a “joke” and “ridiculous” for making this change.
Disney has responded to the controversy, confirming that the photos were taken from the set of the official production, but they are not official photos.
“After Disney’s U.S. spokesperson initially declared the photos published by the Daily Mail were fake, the studio later said the photos were from the production but were not official photos,” The Daily Beast wrote.
Rachel reacted to backlash surrounding her Snow White casting back in January 2022 and then the first photos of her on set were revealed in May 2022.
