‘SNL’ announces Shane Gillis as host after 2019 firing and sparks heated debate on social media

Saturday night live sparked controversy among viewers after announcing comedian Shane Gillis as host of an upcoming episode. Gillis will host the February 24 episode with rapper 21 Savage as the musical guest.

While some praised the iconic late-night comedy show for its choice of host, others criticized the series for hiring the same comedian they fired in 2019 for his racist and homophobic humor.

“Shane Gillis became so unavoidable that the company that fired him had to hire him to host their show,” one fan wrote with a laugh. “If Shane Gillis hosts SNL then I have a reason to watch SNL,” said another.

“I’m not surprised, they also asked him to go back to Morgan Wallen. “They like racists,” enraged one viewer. “SNL said we gave y’all a shout out for black history month, now let’s introduce this random racist…they’re the wooorrrrstttt,” said another.

Shane Gillis apologizes for controversial jokes

The controversy began when SNL Gillis hired the cast along with three other comedians. However, shortly after the announcement, a 2018 episode of his Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast resurfaced.

The episode, since deleted, featured Shane Gillis mocking the Chinese accent and using racial slurs. Gillis and his co-host, Matt McCusker, also ranked comedians on how funny they were based on their race and used homophobic slurs.

Shane Gillis’ comments resulted in quick firing of SNL. Creator Lorne Michaels claimed in a statement that they were unaware of his “prior comments” and did not “vet” him properly.

“The language he used is offensive, hurtful and unacceptable. “We’re sorry we didn’t see these clips sooner,” Michaels wrote.

Shortly after news of Shane Gillis’ firing broke, the comedian took to Twitter (now X) to apologize. “I am a comedian who pushes boundaries. “Sometimes I fail,” Gillis wrote. “If you look back at my 10 years of comedy, most of it bad, you’ll find a lot of bad mistakes.”

“I’m happy to apologize to anyone who was truly offended by anything I said,” he continued. “My intention is never to hurt anyone, but I try to be the best comedian I can be, and sometimes that takes risks.”
