Ravi Sinha is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Chhattisgarh cadre of 1988 batch. He came into limelight after he was appointed as the Secretary of Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), India’s external intelligence agency, in June 2023.

Ravi Sinha was born on Tuesday, 14 January 1964 (age 59 years; as in 2023) in Bhojpur district, Bihar, India. Their zodiac sign is Capricorn. After completing his schooling, he joined St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. After completing his formal education, Ravi appeared for the civil services examinations conducted by UPSC and passed the examinations. In 1988, he joined the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad, Telangana.

In 2000, after Chhattisgarh was separated from Madhya Pradesh and established as a new state, Sinha was transferred to the Chhattisgarh cadre. After this he was posted at Chhattisgarh Police Headquarters in Raipur. Sinha was later appointed as the Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) in Durg, Chhattisgarh. Sinha is regarded as a counter-insurgency expert, and because of this expertise, he played important policing roles in Jammu and Kashmir, the northeastern regions of India, and the Red Corridor (an area heavily affected by Naxalism). In 2007 he was posted to New Delhi on central deputation. Subsequently, he was posted to the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW). In 2016, he took charge of the Operations Division of R&AW. It is reported that he, along with then RAW Secretary Rajinder Khanna, played a key role in the planning and implementation of the 2016 surgical strikes led by Indian Army special forces in Pakistan following the attack on an army camp in Uri, Kashmir. , Sinha has also served as Personal Security Officer (PSO) and Special Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat (SR). He also assisted former RAW secretary Samant Goyal in preparing the operational plan for the conduct of the Balakot air strike in 2019 after the Pulwama attack in which several CRPF soldiers were killed. On 19 June 2023, the Government of India announced the appointment of Ravi Sinha as the 24th Secretary of R&AW; He will continue to work on this post till June 2025.
