Shiv Nadar was born on Saturday, 14 July 1945 (age 77 years; as of 2022) in Moolaipozhy, Madras Presidency, British India (now Madras State, Tamil Nadu). His zodiac sign is Cancer. His friends often called him Magus (the Persian word for magician). Shiv Nadar studied in many schools during his schooling. He went to Town Higher Secondary School, Kumbakonam and then he went to Elango Corporation Higher Secondary School, Madurai. In June 1955, he attended the town high school until 1957. From there he went to St. Joseph’s Boys Higher Secondary School, Trichy and completed his high school education. Shiv Nadar then obtained a pre-university degree from American College, Madurai and then went to PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore to complete his graduation in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

Shiv Nadar started his professional journey in 1967 with Cooper Engineering Limited, a Walchand Group company in Pune. From there, he moved to Delhi Cloth Mills where he worked for their marketing team along with his classmates. During this time, he and his friends decided to quit their jobs and work on their own product. Shiv Nadar along with Subhash Arora, Ajay Chaudhary, Yogesh Vaidya, S. Raman, along with Mahendra Pratap, Arjun Malhotra and DS Puri, started their first company named Microcomp. The company was selling teledigital calculators in the Indian market. Furthermore, in 1976, with a capital of Rs. 2 lakh, he invested Rs 187,000 in a new direction and established HCL Technologies Limited. With the success of the company, HCL expanded its operations and entered the international market with the opening of its first office of Far East Computers in Singapore. He sold IT hardware in Singapore which helped him generate revenue of Rs 1 million, which allowed him to continue his operations. Shiv Nadar was the majority stakeholder in the firm but did not retain any management control.
In 1989, Shiv Nadar moved into the American computer hardware market but due to the presence of Apple and the strict restrictions of the American market, they failed to enter the market. However, in 1991, HCL merged with Hewlett Packard to form HCL HP Limited to enter the US market.
