Shirin Abu Aqleh was a Palestinian-American journalist who worked as a reporter for the Arabic-language channel Al Jazeera for over twenty-five years. He died on 11 May 2022 after being shot by Israel Defense Forces.

Shirin Abu Aqleh was born in East Jerusalem on Sunday, 3 January 1971 (aged 51 at the time of death). His zodiac sign is Capricorn. She attended Rosary Sisters High School, Jerusalem. She joined the Jordan University of Science and Technology to study architecture, but later, she transferred to Yarmouk University, Irbid, Jordan for a bachelor’s degree in print journalism.

Shireen began her career as a journalist in 1997 when she joined Al Jazeera and worked as a reporter on the Arabic-language channel. In 1994, she was one of the founders of the Voice of Palestine (PBC) and worked there as a radio correspondent and presenter. In 2004, she joined Birzeit University as a lecturer.

Controversy

Shirin became embroiled in controversy when a fellow journalist, Ali al-Samoudi, who was also shot during coverage of the raid, alleged that Shirin was shot by Israeli forces. He said there were no Palestinian armed fighters at the scene. Talking about this in an interview he said,

The first bullet hit me and the second bullet hit Shirin. They killed him brutally because they are murderers and they only specialize in killing Palestinians. There was no Palestinian military resistance at all at the scene.”

The Israeli military said it conducted an operation in the Jenin refugee camp, but it did not target journalists.

Death

On 11 May 2022, while Shirin was reporting on an IDF raid in Jenin, she was shot and killed by Israel Defense Forces (IDF). His death was reported by the Palestinian Health Ministry. Raids were being conducted to arrest terrorist suspects. Shireen was admitted to Ibn Sina Hospital after being shot, but was declared dead. A news source reported that Palestinian militants had fired at IDF soldiers, prompting IDF soldiers to return fire. Reportedly, he was shot in an unprotected area below his ear and was deliberately targeted. Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett expressed his condolences on his death and said,

According to the information we have gathered, it appears that armed Palestinians – who were firing indiscriminately at the time – were responsible for the unfortunate death of the journalist.
