- In 2006, a Madurai court issued a non-bailable warrant against Shilpa Shetty for “posing in an indecent manner” in a Tamil newspaper. The petitioner submitted that the newspaper published “very sexy and moderate blow-ups” and alleged that the photograph violated the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act 1986, the Young Persons (Harmful Publications) Act 1956 and section 292 (sale of obscene books) of the Indian Penal Code.
- Shilpa Shetty was one of the contestants of the British reality TV show ‘Celebrity Big Brother 5’. He was accused of being the target of racism and bullying by some of the housemates mainly Jade Goody, Jo O’Meara and Danielle Lloyd. Shilpa was mocked for her Indian accent and a contestant even called her a “dog”. The screening of racial comments resulted in media coverage and responses from the UK and Indian governments. The show was also suspended for season 8 and several corporations even canceled their contracts with contestants accused of racism.
- A controversy erupted when American actor Richard Gere hugged and forcefully kissed Shilpa at an AIDS awareness event. This was strongly opposed by the people and even an Indian court in Rajasthan issued an arrest warrant against Shilpa Shetty and Richard Gere.

- Shilpa was accused of entering the temple wearing shoes while shooting at the Gopinath Deb temple in Sakhigopal, Odisha. The temple authorities lodged a complaint against him at the Satyabari police station.
